The Roka Trucker hat has mesh all on the back and the Endurance Run hat has mesh on the sides. Which would you wear on long runs and an Ironman and why?
I don’t know about cooling, but I know my eyes are thankful for the halo visor. I’m a heavy sweater and the silicone / rubber band forms a reasonably tight seal on my forehead channeling the sweat away. I’m a big fan of this product (white):
I saw a Hispanic dude running the marathon at Placid this past weekend wearing a full brimmed cowboy style hat. No ventilation that I could see! He went .1mph faster for sure because of style points.
I can never, ever run in a “trucker” hat. I’m not cool enough. And I don’t want that pattern sunburn.
I have a couple Brooks running hats of different weights. The light hat they rate for warm weather does make my head cooler than without. The heavier hat looks the same, but is too hot for over 60/65F
I have one of these and LOVE it! I was worried it wouldn’t provide enough coverage since I have a shaved head but I haven’t had any burns or odd tans wearing it though I have only used for up to 15km so far. The advantage of this hat over the ROKA shown by OP is the adjuster on this hat is fabric strap instead of the plastic ones. I find the fabric ones more comfortable and easier to get the size just right.
Any hat in the summer gets too warm for me, so I normally use visors. This one: https://store.haloheadband.com/halo-sport-sweat-visor-p/sv.htm works wonders for me because I sweat so much when I run. It keeps the sweat out of my eyes very effectively.
I have both types of hats, I prefer the trucker because the only sweaty part is the front and bill. I don’t like how the other hat gets when soaked with sweat. When you take it off it’s like putting a wet sloppy rag back on and I can never get the fit right again. The trucker holds shape and looks badass when you flip it around in the shade.
