Run hat comparison

Does the type of hat make a difference on long runs in terms of how hot your head gets?

Compare these two hats

The Roka Trucker hat has mesh all on the back and the Endurance Run hat has mesh on the sides. Which would you wear on long runs and an Ironman and why?

The front of the Roka trucker hat looks like it would get warm and be heavy when wet.

Hat vs. visor? For 70.3 I prefer a visor, this what I use:

Tech hats like the second look dumb. Snap-back trucker gives you swagger which improves form and delays fatigue. #science

Also if you can pull one of these off, you look like a badass. If you can’t then you look lame but your head is cool:

Can Slowtwitch crowd fund a superbike swagger test? I need to know how much swagger/instagram likes my bike will get at different viewing angles…

Anecdotally, can’t tell much difference between types of hats. In 100+ degrees I have used sport trucker, sport, and a full brim beach straw hat.

Hahahhaha a straw hat! I gotta see this!

I don’t know about cooling, but I know my eyes are thankful for the halo visor. I’m a heavy sweater and the silicone / rubber band forms a reasonably tight seal on my forehead channeling the sweat away. I’m a big fan of this product (white):

+1000!

Greg Welch used to do “OK” in Kona wearing a bucket hat!

I saw a Hispanic dude running the marathon at Placid this past weekend wearing a full brimmed cowboy style hat. No ventilation that I could see! He went .1mph faster for sure because of style points.

Saw that at LP too. Definite badass/swagger points!

Yes?

I can never, ever run in a “trucker” hat. I’m not cool enough. And I don’t want that pattern sunburn.
I have a couple Brooks running hats of different weights. The light hat they rate for warm weather does make my head cooler than without. The heavier hat looks the same, but is too hot for over 60/65F

I go for the full coverage endurance style hats because I am bald and trucker hats don’t provide sun protection.

I have one of these and LOVE it! I was worried it wouldn’t provide enough coverage since I have a shaved head but I haven’t had any burns or odd tans wearing it though I have only used for up to 15km so far. The advantage of this hat over the ROKA shown by OP is the adjuster on this hat is fabric strap instead of the plastic ones. I find the fabric ones more comfortable and easier to get the size just right.

Any hat in the summer gets too warm for me, so I normally use visors. This one: https://store.haloheadband.com/halo-sport-sweat-visor-p/sv.htm works wonders for me because I sweat so much when I run. It keeps the sweat out of my eyes very effectively.

I have both types of hats, I prefer the trucker because the only sweaty part is the front and bill. I don’t like how the other hat gets when soaked with sweat. When you take it off it’s like putting a wet sloppy rag back on and I can never get the fit right again. The trucker holds shape and looks badass when you flip it around in the shade.
