Looking at getting my first TT helmet. I was planning to go for the Giro aero head 1 but then found a really good deal on the Rudy Project Wing Dream. Any thoughts on these two helmets side by side for a first time TT helmet person? I’ve seen the aero data and seems like they’d both work well for people without aero testing but curious what people think. Thanks!
Same! I “tested” mine for like 10 minutes before I took it with me to a race internationally. Worked awesome. So much more room for my prescription sunglasses.
The only draw back is flying with that monstrosity is hilarious. I was able to fit my aerohead in the top part of my gigantic Zone3 transition bag. Not so much for the storm trooper deal. I had to put that into the main part of the bag.
The wing dream is generally a faster helmet. Given the choice I would go with it.
That being said, I currently use the Aerohead and here are some of the hi-lights:
-Lighter (helpful if you have neck issues) Note: it’s lighter, but not light by non aero helmet standards.
-Still quite aero without the visor (the wing dream is an aero disaster if you remove the visor; it just becomes a big air scoop).
-Cheap. I got my first one for $125 on a black Friday sale back when they first came out. I got my current one last year online for $150.
-Doubles as an aero road helmet. You see pro riders using it in the classics and the TdF.
@Titanflexr the reason I ask is someone I know tested on two people and got better than one would expect results. But it was a small sample size so wonder if you tried or this is by what we would expect by looking at it. I am simply looking for data
Thanks. To be honest I would have preferred you told me you had the data first hand.
I can say the tester I spoke to is VERY competent, and saw quite small difference, so I am guessing this is a big YMMV. Maybe more position dependant than other helmets
It is one of those things I hope we can get more data on as it is huge for ventilation and people with glasses
Yeah, wish I had actual data; but it was a qualitative result from someone who had tested.
The Wing Dream may be very head position dependent. Eyeball wind tunnel (caveat) looks like head up the helmet would catch a lot of wind without a visor, but head down the flare in the shell still does a good job of directing air around the shoulders. As you get test data, I’d love to see how it plays out.
I’ve done some testing with the WD and Aerohead. The first two runs are with the Aerohead, it shows a bit of spread between the two tests. Most likely because I put it on my head slightly differently. The right two tests are the WD, so quite close together. These tests were all performed on one morning, I started with the WD, then the AH. After that I did quite some other tests and went back to the AH and WD to verify my baseline.
Concering comfort, the WD is much more roomy and significantly cooler. The only downside is that I haven’t figured out where to store the visor during a ride. Especially for a course like Nice, this is important (i.e. climbing at 10-15 km/h).
