On this weekends long ride I tried out starting with the shoes clipped in and used a small rubber band through the shoe loop and around the skewer to hold them level. Worked great and I got it the first time, almost.
That damn rubber bad wouldn’t snap! I rode almost a mile before reaching down and ripping it out at which point it snapped right on my finger nail. Hurt so much I almost cried
So what is the secret? It was a pretty thin rubber band, maybe a thicker band with a small cut in it?
Take your “what if I get chased by a Bear” M1911 loaded with hollow point that follows the “right to bear arms” thingy; thus the right to shoot a bear in the arm or something.
Shoot erraticly at elastic. Second clip, repeat.
Your run times might be affected slightly.
On the plus side, sagging under your Lycra, this piece of steel (1105gr without clip) that outweighs your frame, cannot be considered “hidden” by Law Enforcement.
If from Australia, same, but with full size Bowie knife. Stab not slash.

As a Canadian I found it difficult to train a beaver to chew through it while I ride. They are too timid

How do you fit a beaver in the back pocket of your jersey? Do you discard after use? Is beaver throwing considered littering?
I would suggest a Beaver Carrier TM behind the saddle, probably worth a few minutes on 180km. Could probably fit in a P4.
Alternatively I “rub and tug it” it’s a trick I learned from Jack Layton (you’d have to be Canadian to get that one) Little off topic but we knew he liked Asian women and who doesn’t like a happy ending? Not sure what the big news is

A beaver? Get a honey badger. Those things are bad ass, and they just don’t give a $#!@.
This is another one of my MANY questions in this sport. Does the shoe clipped in really speed things up. In the 8 tri’s I have done I have seen numerous crashes both mounting and dismounting due to the whole shoe clipped in. Yes it looks cool when you get it right but I dont see that much time made up compared to getting your shoes on and running with bike, then riding fast to dismount line, slamming on the brakes, and running again. Last 70.3 a guy pulled in front of me just at the end but as he struggled to get his feet out I passed him again, as we came in to transition he pulled up alongside jumped off and slid for about 10ft. I ran on. He much later caught up to me on the run(bastard), but he was bloodied and eventually faded. I will stick with my dorky ways for now.

Yes if you know what you are doing, no if you don’t. I can run faster than anyone in bike shoes so I save time there, I am also putting my shoes on at 20 mph while you would be standing still. Its only slower if you can’t do it right. If you want to figure out how just make it simple every time you finish your bike ride leave your shoes clipped in so it forces you to do it at the start of each ride.

Can see a problem there. The honey badger may eat the bands holding your shoes before you get out of the water and into T1. More to the point it could probably eat your bike too. . . . . . . . . . and thinking about it. . . . . . . . If it’s a carbon bike its gonna be really pissed with all of those carbon splinters and probably eat you too! ;o)

It saves time even if you don’t do it right, as long as you don’t crash or knock someone else down. I don’t care what shoes you have on, even MTB shoes with SPD clips, you can run bare foot faster than you can in the shoes. If all you do is run bare foot out to mount, then get on your bike like a normal mount and ride off with your feet on top of the shoes, then put your feet in them on down the road, you are way ahead of the guy that sat down and put them on in T1, then ran in them to mount, then did just what you did anyway to get clipped in.
