RS 250 Greatest Guitarists - What's the worst picks you noticed

In the electric bass world there are 3 people that stand out creatively - Wilton Felter, Carole Kaye, and Donald “Duck” Dunn. Between those 3 they account for a vast majority of the bass lines that are imitated or copied today.

There are also 3 people that stand out from a technical standpoint - Geddy Lee, Anthony Kiedis, and Les Claypool. I leave out Victor Wooten because he isn’t really playing the part of bass player, and Jaco Pastorious was a one trick pony - He played fretless very fast. His intonation was marginal at best.

I think you mean Flea

Maybe it’s like the Foo Fighters. Their drummer is really the second best drummer in the band.

Maybe Flea is really the second best bassist in RHCP.

Mind Blown!!!

I didn’t see Johnny Depp on that list so it’s trash.

Recency bias always makes these lists worthless but for the exercise of ripping the list apart.

Agree with your assessment of Dire Straits. Same for Steely Dan. I just don’t get the appeal.

I bet you don’t agree that B# = C either

Don’t bring Math into this, especially Trigonometry LOL
.

For me that was Carrie Brownstein at 64 and then 32 places later I see Mark Knopfler.

I should preface this with the fact that I love Carrie Brownstein as a sketch actress, and while I’m not into her music, I completely respect what Sleater - Kinney does. I’m also not a Dire Straits fan (don’t like the singing nor the overall feel of the band).

I was just glossing over the list before I read your comments. I saw her picture and was like she looks so much like Fred Armisen’s co-star in Portlandia. I had no idea.

Me too.

Interestingly, Fred’s a really good drummer.

Fred has serious cred

"Ep. #826: Steve Albini and Fred Armisen

Steve Albini and Fred Armisen discuss Letters to Santa: The Holiday Gala in Chicago, which stars John Mulaney and takes place December 5 in Chicago, and Letters To Santa: The 24 Hour Comedy and Music Marathon in Los Angeles on December 16-17, their long friendship, their respective interactions with Conan O’Brien, Fred’s talents for mimicry, Steve’s penchant for comedic logic, Chicago’s distinction as a hub for top-tier comedy, music, and recording studios, Fred’s interest in “complicated drumming techniques,” the fact that a new Shellac album will likely be released soon, other future plans, and much more."

Pleased to see many of my favourite guitarists on the list; Steve Howe (Yes #123), Adrian Belew (King Crimson #118), Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple #75), Robert Fripp (King Crimson #59).

I was hoping to see John Williams included, if only for his sublime work with the British-Australian classical/prog rock fusion band Sky, but soon realised classical guitarists were outside the remit of the list.

How some of the names made that list at the expense of Allan Holdsworth, I have no fucking idea. Allan Holdsworth - Wikipedia

No one knows Allan Holdsworth except the most die hard guitarists and the cycling community of Southern California. Fun fact, one of his solo songs was dedicated to Tullio Campagnolo.

Another thought I had was should someone be on a “greatest” list if almost no one has even heard of you?

Hugh McCracken - 206 should be higher just on the basis of the intro riff in Brown Eyed Girl because every band I’ve been in, no guitarist could ever play it at the proper tempo!

Well, there is this from his Wiki
Van Halen, Frank Zappa, Shawn Lane, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Neal Schon and Gary Moore have proclaimed Holdsworth one of the most advanced guitarists of his time.
It is sort of like saying who is the greatest triathlete of all time and the pro triathletes talking about someone who maybe only raced one season but couldn’t be beat vs the public saying Iron Cowboy.

Isn’t that every song that the guitarist starts by himself?

Me: “Have you ever tried practicing with a metronome?”
Guitarist: “No.”
Me: “That was a rhetorical question.”

And, sad to say, but a good bit of the average public right now has never heard of Shawn Lane, Steve Vai, Neal Schon, Gary Moore, or John Petrucci, and I bet even Zappa is on the edge of what people know.

In Youtube scrolling, one of the frequent guitar content creators I see will occasionally do a “man on the street” type of video where he talks to random people and asks them guitar related questions, and if they get them right, he’ll give them a guitar. The number of them who don’t know names like Hendrix, Van Halen, etc (especially with younger people) is astounding to me.

Keith Urban above Paul Simon?
Eric Clapton only 35th?
Brian May only 33rd?
Randy Rhoads would be higher than 20th if he hadn’t died so young
Not really sure that 5-7th place deserve such high spots, and would put Prince higher

Higher than 14th? You mean Prince should be closer to #1? Or further away from #1?

He wasn’t even in the top 100 in the 2003 and 2010 lists. If you mean he should be closer to #1, can you please explain why you think that?

I like Prince too, but that’s the single video everyone shows when they argue for him. You’d think there would be countless examples if you want to put him at the top of the list.

There are. But this one just happens to exemplify what he was capable of. Unfortunately for him, I don’t think he got to show off just how good he was with the music he was writing.
It’s not like you can play like that without knowing how to play like that.

Of course, and again, I don’t think anyone is arguing that he’s not a fantastic guitarist. But this single example doesn’t vault him to the top of an all time greatest list.

And anyone who tells you Prince is the 2nd greatest guitarist of all time is trying too hard.

I agree, but it seems to be quite the trend right now. A Super Bowl performance in the rain, an untimely death, and a new generation of contrarians and Prince has gone from a guy who played better than a lot of us expected, to one of the greatest of all time.

I should also add a fake Eric Clapton quote to the equation.

I’ll probably get a ton of crap for this, but Prince is vastly overrated. Can I get an amen?

Yep, again, I’m a fan, and I’m not saying you can’t dig up examples, just that when people advocate for Prince, they always show that one performance. I’ve posted it myself.
