How far down did it go? How many spots?
really? no one knows?
I don’t know how far it rolled down, but…holy smoking fast, Batman! That division was no joke yesterday.

I placed 75th in the 30-34 division…did the roll down get that far ![]()
17 finishers in 30-34 went under 10 hours.
It’s not surprising (the times).
The competition is getting faster. Up your game, or stay home.
What’s interesting is that in 1991 at IMC, 22 guys in 30-34 went sub 10. The only reason I know is I had to dig up the results book. M25-29 has 31 guys sub 10. The amazing thing is that many of the really really fast guys would not show up to IMC because they all qualified for Kona through half or olympic tris…on the other hand there was only one path to Kona for guys who were slow swimmers, fast bikers, fast runners and that was IMC. Today if you are slow on the swim, fast on the bike, fast on the run you have around 7 Ironmans to pick from and the guys who are super fast at all sports only have 4 or so half IM’s.
I think overall the fields are stronger, but I think it all seems to be amplfiied somewhat because of the number of races with less slots…it just seems like people have to go faster to go to Kona, when to some degree, its just less slots per race driving down qual times at each race, and some of the guys on the bubble doing multiple races to try to qual thus stacking the fields…when there was only 1 race, they all went there once.

I was present for roll down yesterday. Every age group, except Female 25-29, had all Kona slots claimed before roll down or rolled down just one to two spots. If you were not in the top of your age group then it was a no go for Kona this year.
The Female 25-29 had about 6 or 7 names called out before they found a winner. She was very excited, as I would be as well.
Next year, it will be even more difficult. 65 slots this year and only 50 next year.

Very true; I’m sure the same names will appear more than once at the top end, chasing the slots.
Ten M40 guys went sub-9 in Austria this year. Yikes.
Agreed. ST’s very own Bryan Sieber (controlsguy21) blazed his way to a 9:41…good enough for 5th in AG!!!
I’m calling it now in 2012 for all M39 and under, 9:30 if you want a spot. 9:45 might get you a rolldown! (IMFL and IMSG being outliers)
BETTER BRING IT!

I was there cheering for Bryan (and 11 other club members). After a 1:03 swim and a 5:03 bike he was showing up as 6th in AG…then as the other 50 minute swimmers and fast bikers hit the run course (plus the TT start delay, which really makes it a bitch to tell where an athlete is in the AG standings), he drops from 6th to 9th in AG. He managed to back door his way back into 5th AG by holding onto a 7:50 average pace marathon while the four guys ahead of him steadily dropped from 7:30’s to 7:45’s to 8:15’s to 8:45’s per mile in the last half of the marathon. The guy who qualfied 6th in AG was 56 seconds behind him. 9.5 hours of racing and 56 seconds delta…
Managing to just not slow down made all the difference as he climbed up to 5th place. When I talked to him yesterday, he said that M30-34 had 6 AG slots and rolled to #9.
How the hell do you end up 26th overall in a field of 2,500 and 5th in your age group? Brutal competition, you guys are freaks. Fantastic job to everyone out there on Sunday.
How far down did it go? How many spots?
I know the 7th place guy from Sweden got a roll down after trying for 8 years. I think there were 5 slots in this AG. 5 in mine too AG45-49 so I got one too.
6 slots, pretty sure it rolled down to 8th. VERY fast group this year. I finished in 10:30 after spending 20min during the bike on the side of the road with various mechanical issues, but even if I had those 20min back I wouldn’t have cracked top 20. Guys are definitely getting a lot faster, and its only going to get tougher as the # of slots per race dwindle.
Also pretty impressed with the M18-24AG this year. They had some real standouts at the pointy end of the field.
I raced that age group. I knew I was having a decent run, and was making up a lot of time. I thought I might be top 15 maybe?? until I got to the finish line and my family told me I was 31st place in M30-34. All I could do was laugh and shake my head. 31st in AG and 138 OA…now thats some steep competition. Like the other people have said, if you want a spot at Kona, you better bring it. Hats off to those who laid it down out there. Great race, had a great time.
The WINNING times from some Ironman races 20 years ago wouldn’t get you an agegroup slot now in most of the fast agegroups.
You have got to be freakin kidding me. I am in the F25-29 and was pretty close to getting a spot so i went to the roll down and looked on the results and it said that there was 2 spots for our age group and they clearly marked on the paper that “ALL SPOTS WERE CLAIMED” for our age group, so I left. So someone please tell me what happened.
I believe that it rolled down from one of the older age groups with someone that did not finish.
What the previous poster said was correct, F25-29 probably rolled down to 8th-10th place in the AG. Don’t remember the girl’s name.
I placed 68 in the M30-34. 11:22 for my second Ironman. I know I have some work to do but wow these boys are pretty fast in the 30-34 division.

Are you kidding me?Clearly you don’t know your history!
Here are five of the six Ironmans that year. Can’t find the info on Huddles time:
IMC 1991: Mike McCormack–8:16
IMOZ 1991:Pauli Kiuru–8:22
IMNZ 1991: Dirk Ashmoneit–8:30
IMJ 1991: Paul Huddle–8:??
IMLZ 1991:Edit-(Lanza started the next year as far as I can tell:Ben Van Zelst–9:01)
IMG 1991: Pauli Kiuru --8:04
IMH 1991: Mark Allen–8:18
Please show me which age-groupers are hitting these times in Nth America today?
It makes me sad to think that I have almost no hope to make it to Kona once I leave my 18-24 a.g. IMAZ will be my first full this year… I am really hoping no one super fast shows up haha.
It really is all dependent on who shows up on race morning… Those times at both Lou and Can were very quick… Even with the heat in Can
