Roll Call: Californiaman IM / Caliman 1/2 IM

Okay, we have 11 days to go. I am going to do the Granite Bay sprint on Sunday for my last tune up. If this weather were to hold, it would be great and Mary will have kept her promise for perfect weather!! :o)

Dave

Yeah, so far so good on the weather…supposed to cool off even more later this week. Probably be like mid 70s this weekend for training/racing.

And then next week, plan on the inevitable September heat wave. I predict 100 degrees by race day; you heard it here first.

Not that I want that, mind you, especially for you guys doing the full…but you know that’s how it will shake out.

Oh yeah, I’m in for the half.

I agree, just our luck Indian summer will hit with the killer winds. If so, the pros will be happy.

So, I guess we must pick up our registration stuff on Friday. I live 65 minutes from Davis so I get to get up bright and early on Saturday and drive down. Going to be a long long day.

Dave

Yikes—I’m going to go up Friday and take some of the stress out of the equation. The two transition areas are the thing that has made me think twice about driving up Saturday a.m. If it was OD or less, probably would do that, but longer than that…well, like you say, the day’s gonna be long enough as it is—especially for the full.

Hey H2OFUN, was that swim @ the LOP tri really .6? It seemed further.

Still a little undecided on this one. I have got mates wedding the next day in Colorado which I had better get my ass over to. On the other hand, when do you ever get a triathlon - let alone a 1/2 or full ironman that finishes 200 yards from your front door.

If anyone has a copy of the best-seller “Train for your first half ironman in 11 days” I’ll buy it.

Cheers, Paul

I’m in for Caliman. My first HIM! Look for me when you guys are zooming past me!

I’m driving up early Friday from San Diego to do the 1/2. Very much looking forward to it.

I would say the swim was pretty close to .6 miles. Since I had to do it w/o a wet suit, I can not compare my time to last year.

Dave

I expect you to beat Steve now. :o)

Dave

I expect you to beat Steve now. :o)

Dave

Hey – I’ve actually been going to the pool for a change! I about tied him on the swim at Ralph’s in 2002. If he’s been slacking off on his swimming, who knows? I might be a few seconds ahead of him for a few seconds.

Man did I just get a surprise. I signed up for the CIM before the Feb date so I could get the 350 price, and force me to do the race.

So, I went and put my name into the registered lookup for the heck of it, and my name is not there. I can not find a registration receipt. This is great.

Glad I found out now something got messed up. Wonder if I got hit with a fun computer glitch when I registered.

Dave

Harsh! I don’t think it’s sold out, so at least if they never got your entry you can still get in.

Will cost me a little more money, but I should be lucky to still get in.

Going to check the credit card records first, but, I must have messed up somehow.

Dave

Well, I found my credit card statement showed I paid in Jan like I thought. Will try to work this out with J&A.

Dave

Sounds like we will have a real IM race!! We can pretend we are in Hawaii, without the humidity. :o) And I did not even have to fly there to get the feeling of the winds.

Dave

Yeah, this is why Dave Scott was so good in Kona.

I went to UC Davis back in the early 90’s, bought my first set of Profile aero bars there when I was riding to and from campus. Anything to get low and out of that wind…

What is interesting is I was looking out the window at work from Roseville yesterday and I saw no wind. So, I guess no matter what it is in the east part of the valley, the west is always windy. Guess I had better be shooting for a 14 hour IM.

Dave

I biked Putah Creek road yesterday as well, the wind was a little harsh but nothing to write home about - that is until I hit the big tomato crop just when the trucks were pulling out. Holy crap - dust everywhere man. Great stuff, I just love that road!!

I think this will be a great race - if the wind and heat really pick up (and the winds can REALLY blow - just ask anyone who has done Foxy’s Fall Century) this race will be an absolute beauty!!

Cheers, Paul

Okay, you guys are all scaring me! i do my 58-mile ride once a week for training and struggle on the way back with a 10-12 mph headwind. Sounds like that’s child’s play compared to what I’m going to face at Caliman! Damn, better eats me spinach!
