Rocktape

I just wanted to mention about this miracle tape. I have been injured for a while with a serious achilles tendonitis. A while ago my physical theraphist introduced me to Kinesio Taping.
With the help of the tape I am almost pain free now. I am was really sceptical about this but after trying it for 2-3 days I saw real difference.
There are about 3-4 different brands out there, I tried them all but Rocktape is the best among them! It does not come off in the pool, shower etc. I can use one application for 3-4 days. Other brands peel off in 1-2 days and most do not work well with chlorine. I have a lot of free time in my hand so I wrote down the comparision of major 4 brands in the market. KT TApe, Rock Tape, Kinesio Tex and SpiderTech.

I have been using these four brands in the last 3 weeks regularly and at the same time I also see a really fast marketing race among them. All say they are the best, stickiest and strechiest. since the price is relatively cheap compared to other stuff we use, I gave a shot to all of them then compared head to head.
Some failed big time, some had cons and some had pros.

KT Tape: Available everywhere! Cheap compared to others and it is already cut in strips to save you the hassle! Also the tape is in Y shape splits. Each strip is Y shape pre cut.
This is also a CON for some because in places like achilles you need a full unsplit tape and it splits after using it for couple of hours. Stayed on for 3 days of training 2 chlorine pool swims and 3 showers. it did not come off by itself, I had to remove it!
Good thing about it, it is probably the most practical among all. no scissors needed!

Rocktape: For me this is the best among the other. As they claim it is stickier and stretchy than others. Yes it is true! Comes in lots of cool colors and designs. Stays on forever! And available in both strips and rolls. I prefer the roll and cut my own tape. CONS? Its almost impossible to find it locally, expensive if you add shipping to $20 per roll! and if you don’t use a high quality scissors the edges started to come off after a day.

Kinesiotex: Big failure! I had high hopes for this since they “invented” Kinesio taping… But boy! I had band aid with Sponge Bob figures on it stayed longer than this! I put it on in the morning and by lunch time half of the tape came off! Price factor made me buy another roll since it is $10 and free shipping. But second roll was the same. So this is a no no!

Spidertech: This one is interesting because they come in special shapes for special applications. Good thing, they are hassle free and stay on for days. Bad thing, average $12 per application if you screw up applying your $12 is gone! And they only have precut applications for general injuries and joints. They have a plain roll too but I have not tried it.

As a summary my vote goes for Rocktape! But I also use KT Tape too for its practicality. I hear KT Tape has an uncut version too, I only wished they had put that on sale as the other strips they are selling at Sports Authority.
As for the question which one works, they all do! Just some stay longer and look injuries more fun!
Google it on you tube for your type of pain or injury, there are more than couple of ways to apply for single area. Some may work for you some may not.

I can see WTC having an emergency meeting to outlaw wearing that stuff in any of their events.

Interesting. I tired KT tape on my knees out of curiosity. If applied correctly ( I had some issues) it does seem to work but the edges sometimes would fray and drive me nuts.

By now probably they already have M Dot logo designed tape. http://rocktape.com/shop/category/rocktape/

Now they need to get some TNT logo tape. Those people always seem to have some sort of wrap going on.

Nice review, you reminded me that Rock tape use to last me up to 4 swims, where as KT usaully only lasts about 2 swims. Im gona have to do some more indepth testing of the two for myself, to see if I can justify the price of Rock tape vs KT.

Love the stuff…blogged a bit about it last month.

spray on adhesive on the body part before the tape makes it stay on even longer
.

Do you apply it yourself? If so, how and how did you learn proper technique?

Looks like a wrong link

Seriously it is not that hard to apply. there are lots of different ways to apply, both on www.kttape.com and www.rocktape.com has good starting points. If you google Kinesio Taping you will have some examples. I found that the tape is not the magic, it is how you apply it. Keep in mind there are lots of ways to apply for single area one may work for you and others may not.
From the web page:
Unlike traditional athletic tape which binds and doesn’t stretch, ROCKTAPE is engineering to mimic the human skin. This stretchiness is the secret behind ROCKTAPE. ROCKTAPE stretches up to 190% of its original length but has amazing ’snap-back’ or recovery. This is what gives ROCKTAPE its performance advantage over other tapes.
To achieve this, we introduce a special weave into the cotton when the tape is woven. This weave means the tape will stretch in only one direction and the tension of the weave is engineered to mimic the same elasticity as skin. Together, these properties create what we call a “Bio-Mechanical Lifting Mechanism”. This simply means that the tape can lift the skin away from the soft tissue underneath the skin. This lifting capability is what promotes blood flow and lymph drainage. This is easy to explain but difficult to manufacturer, which is why we make our tape in a special factory in Korea.
ROCKTAPE can also be used to stabilize muscles and joints that have been sprained or hurt. Unlike braces and sleeves that constrain and reduce blood flow, ROCKTAPE can provide support and stability while increasing blood flow. Thus, the tape’s capabilities make it well suited to the repair of localized muscle groups.

Greg from Rocktape started setting up at the track last year during races and I tried it there and have continued using it. My PT also has been using it post-surgery knee.

Is the TNT RockTape associated with the TNT RockMan Triathlon?

Thanks for the great post. Do you use the tape every time you run, or only for races?

I started using KT Tape, which seems very similar to the Rocktape. Do you have any issue with it staying put? I have problems with it peeling at the edges by the end of my workout.

I have used it on my foot and my hammy. I usually wipe down the area with rubbing alcohol, which helps. I am thinking about using adhesive spray. How does the Rocktape stick?

On a professional side - KTex is dead. KTex had thousands of PT’s nation wide pay quite a bit of money to be “certified” in the use of their product as a medical/therapeutically used product in conjunction with physical therapy - again…by PROFESSIONALS who already had their DPT, MPT, DOT, MOT as well as PTA and others. Now, we see KTex on every other joker in the gym, self applied improperly. They should have stuck to their guns and kept the professional aspect to their product if they wanted it to work properly… Now, if the mention of KTex is passed in Outpatient Ortho or other PT environments more often than not an active patient will say “I can get that at Dicks Sporting goods” and arrive the next time to therepy with it improperly applied.

Medically, there are some simple products that are typical dressings and the like that you just can not get at Walgreens but are not medications at all…many of these belong off the shelves because the last thing some of the users of these prodcts need is improper self diagnosis and showing up weeks later with larger calamities such as necrotic infected tissue under the surgical wraps they got themselves at the vetrenary ware house.

That being said - they are all good products and can work well, I am glad they worked for you.
