My thoughts later. Eight got in each of the last two years.
I think you have to look at the RnR HoF as just the popular music HoF.
Seems like Country, Bluegrass, etc tend to stay over in the Country Music HoF, but rock, rap, folk, pop, prog, alternative, etc are all fair game for the RnR hoF.
I begrudgingly acknowledge that the RRHOF has become the Generally Popular Music HOF, that doesn’t mean I have to give any of those artists my vote. With that I narrowed my list down to anything that I would consider Rock by the widest definition, which takes me down to 9.
The Black Crowes
Jeff Buckley
Phil Collins
Melissa Etheridge
Billy Idol
INXS
Iron Maiden
Joy Division/New Order
Oasis
Of the remaining acts, I’d probably have to pull Jeff Buckley off. As huge and influential Grace was, I’m not sure one album is really enough to merit HOF entry. If I was basing it on personal opinion, Phil Collins would be out, but I understand how huge he was in the 80’s and 90’s, even outside of Genesis.
Let’s also take a minute, like we have to do every year, to point out how ridiculous it is that Iron Maiden is not already in. This is a band that plays to MASSIVE crowds all over the world, including places that most other bands don’t even bother to go. They’re hugely influential, they still record new music, and they’re still untouchable live.
Again, and which I’ve stated every year we’ve done this, the ship has long since sailed on it being the R&R HoF. It’s the Popular Music HoF. They just don’t want to change the name.
The other thing that people need to understand is rock music has kind of been basically dead for 20+ years. When was the last big selling rock album? Green Day’s American Idiot? Foo Fighters? Coldplay? So it’s going to be an onslaught of hip-hop and pop artists going forward.
Anyhoo…
Very strong group of nominees. I’d have no issue with any of them getting in besides New Edition. They shouldn’t even have been nominated. There’s zero bona fides.
The eight acts I would induct, in no particular order other than the order I originally listed them:
The Black Crowes
Phil Collins
Billy Idol
INXS
Iron Maiden
Joy Division/New Order
Oasis
Wu-Tang Clan
The eight acts I think will get in:
Mariah Carey
Phil Collins
Melissa Etheridge

Joy Division/New Order
Oasis
Pink
