Do any of you have any experience/advice/tales about this race? This will be my first half-iron distance . . .
I have not done the race, but I live 5 min. from the course and have been doing the bike course the last several weekends. It is really hilly, I mean really hilly. Also, it has been getting hot late in the day, so expect temperatures in the 90s. Other than that, everyone says its a great race, so good luck, and I hope you have spent some time riding and running in hills.
Hey…
I did this race in 2005. Very rolling course…no hills that are all that difficult, but very little flat. I did like the bike course in that it was one big loop. The run was fairly flat, but be ready for some heat and humidity. Overall, I thought it was a very well run race…good organization.

Great Race, my favorite HIM of the year. Course is tough, but not too tough if you are used to riding and running rolling hills. SetUpEvents does a great job with this one!!
It is always very hot on the run, though. I mean very hot!!!
Not sure if course has changed since I did it, but it was two loop lake swim. You actually get out of the water after first loop and run around a cone or something and then back in the water for second lap. Good time to clear the goggles.
There were some stairs going up from lake to T1 that were steep. Either stairs or some type of ramp (can’t remember). Tough to keep heart rate down if you sprint to T1.
Bike course was hilly and hot. It really drained me since it was the first hot race of the year.
Run was hotter. Be prepared for heat and humidity.
Very well organized and fun race. Good luck.
I’ve never done it, but heard the same thing others have said. Hilly, hot, humid.
On the better side…Setup Events puts on spectacular races.
Good luck in your first half!
macon is a great race. i did it last year and will be working it this year. the swim in two loops, and going up to T1 is an uphill, it isnt super steep but you will be feeling your legs. as said before, the bike is one loop, rolling but nothing crazy climbing wise. run is kind of a Y shaped route with another Y on on one of the ends. overall i think it is a great race. post race is fun as well. i would be prepared for some heat and humidity on the run. last year was mostly overcast i think, so it wasnt too bad. but previous years the it was very hot and the run offers little shade. good luck out there, ill see ya.
