Roberts as Bush's nominee

Based on what little I have gleaned since the announcement, Roberts appears to be a promising choice. Here are two things that make me think this: substantial Supreme Court experience as both a government lawyer and in private practice and support from both parties for his nomination to the DC court of appeals.

Opponents will have very little ammunition to use to block his nomination. Just a rock solid choice who hasn’t been involved or given glaring opinions on hot button issues. In that regard it was a smart choice.

and cnn is reporting this as well
.

I don’t know anything about him other than the slobbering report on NPR I heard on the way home.

To be honest, that right there makes me more than a little apprehensive. My gut reaction, admittedly unfounded in any facts, is that this is yet another Republican appointee who’s “expected,” (wink wink) to be a conservative, but soon “evolves” into a flaming liberal. If he had any real promise of being a conservative, he’d be getting ripped to pieces right now.

NPR is run by Republicans now…

You conservatives are never satisfied:)

My guess is that we’ll be getting a strict constructionist who will not reason to a result. When someone has that kind of intellectual integrity, you can’t always predict outcomes from an ideological perspective.

I will take my chances with someone who approaches the law that way every time. I hope your description is accurate.

Unless you consider arguing that prayer should be allowed at middle school graduation ceremonies (Lee v. Weisman, 505 U.S. 577 (1992).)

Oh no, not prayer! What will the kids do? Who can control what they are thinking? What if they are upset? How can we will protect them? With all of the smut on the internet kids see today, not to mention in movies and in previous Democrat administrations, how are their little minds equipped to handle something as meaningful and genuine as a prayer? You know how it works these days…a few kids choose to recite a few words on their own and if they happen to be under a public roof that means the Government has established a national religeon and other kids that might hear this prayer and naturally they will be converted! Maybe if we just pass out more condoms they will forget about the *prayers. *

I’m sorry, did you say something relevant to the conversation?

I’ve made it a habbit to avoid relevancy whenever possible. Just getting ready for the inane nitpicking that the left is gearing up for. This is already out from MoveOn.org (yes, that MoveOn.org): In nominating John Roberts, the president has chosen a right wing corporate lawyer and ideologue for the nation’s highest court instead of a judge who would protect the rights of the American people. Working for mining companies, Roberts opposed clean air rules and worked to help coal companies strip-mine mountaintops. He worked with Ken Starr (yes, that Ken Starr), and tried to keep Congress from defending the Voting Rights Act. He wrote that Roe v. Wade should be “overruled,” and as a lawyer argued (and won) the case that stopped some doctors from even discussing abortion. That’s why we believe: THE SENATE MUST NOT CONFIRM RIGHT-WING CORPORATE LAWYER JOHN ROBERTS TO THE SUPREME COURT.

Every single item mentioned in that drivel has been twisted far out of context. Every single item is defensible, but those on the left have absolutly no interest in having an honest exchange of ideas. It is just distort, twist, smear, shout loudest and oppose. And it is only beginning.

It’s a shame that the left has already mobilized in politicizing this nomination and playing it out in the media rather than taking the steps to properly evaluate the candidate.

Until they start using their critical thinking and reasoning skills they will continue to spin their wheels and wonder why no one can understand their supposed platforms.

Was he not arguing this case as a lawyer in private practice? Since the case was heard before SCOTUS in 1991, and Roberts was not appointed to the federal bench in 1992, I believe he was.

Can a public defender, who defends murderers, never be later appointed/elected as a prosecutor?

Some people still believe in separation of church and state…

At the same time others believe that their beliefs shouldn’t be hindered.

Just saying a prayer in a state building is NOT a merging of church and state. It is (or should be) individual free speech. If a group of kids, on their own and not as a part of the school curriculum, decide to say a prayer and happen to be on school grounds they are not able to.

That term has been morphed into meaning something beyond it’s original meaning.

I am shocked, shocked to hear that this lawyer actually had clients. Corporate clients no less. This is just terrible. He should withdraw at once.

If he had defended terrorists I could understand, but to have an actually company as a client is inexcusable.

Was the nomination not announced during prime time? That seems to make it a process that will get played out in the media. Both sides will be guilty of “politicizing” a politcal process, surprise surprise.

Was the nomination not announced during prime time?

Yes it was. For good reason. Is the nomination and selection of someone to this position not worthy of prime time news?

Not if ‘Who wants to be a Hilton’ gets bumped. Two words for you man - priorities!
