I was just wondering…those of you who slap aero-bars on your road bike, do you alter the seatpost and stem? ie Profile fast forward or shorten / lengthen the stem? This to make the bike more “tri specific” and increase the angle.
Or do you keep the original specs and just add an aerobar?
differing schools of thought on the this… But the most widely accepted one is to 1) use shorty aerobars… you’ll be more upright than steep geometry bike. But you’ll still get a pretty good position 2) get a “neutral” seat post. I put a Thomson Elite on my road bike.
Generally, it is not advised to get one of those forward posts. The reason being that it alters the handling characteristics making the the bike very “twitchy”.
I ‘converted’ my 60cm Cannondale R1000 into a tri bike by flipping the seatpost and putting aero bars on. That worked for me because I have really long legs. My bike does get a bit finicky above 40mph, but I live in NJ, so that’s a rarity here.
Reason I ask is cause I managed to scrounge a FF post and a Profile Aerolite for next to nothing (gotta basebar aswell, but not gonna use it.) Like yourself got longlegs, 6’2 185lbs. Plenty of power in them from carrying very heavy backpacks
I ride a F80, as a student couldn’t afford much more. The plan is to save up and eventually get a tri-specific bike, but that won’t be in the nearest future. Might upgrade the wheels first, not sure. Until then I continue to drool at the Cervelo bikes…(as he wipes the froth from his mouth just at the thought)
I normally put a 10mm shorter stem on when i put on the aerobars. i will also push the seat forward but not by more then 1 cm. This effectively shortens the toptube by about an inch. I find this helps me get into a more comfortable position on the aero bars.
i don’t normally put a different seat on but would consider it for a long course race.
this assumes you use your road bike for road racing & triathlons. if you are doing a 100% switch over I would put on a tri-specific seat and get a zero setback seatpost.
If you have long legs, you may want to look at brands other than cervelo. With the seatpost in the steep position it may be too steep and in the slack position it’s a road bike.
Also, I learned that with long femurs, having a really steep setup isn’t the best. I just got my custom Elite Razor, and it’s seat angle is steeper than my C’dale, but only by a couple of degrees.
