Are there any trails or routes that are road bike friendly (i.e., not loose gravel) in the Baltimore suburbs that are protected from road traffic (at least, in part)? Thank you.
Personally I would stay north of Hunt Valley and avoid Falls road, Mt Carmel Rd and Middletown Rd. Those 3 are the main roadways to I83 and cars FLY on those roads.
I’d start at Veloccino (Butler, MD) and ride around that area. I do a lot of riding around Prettyboy reservoir and never really have any issues. There are group rides out of Veloccino also (I think both Saturday and Sunday mornings).
I can second the recommendation to use the roads near Veloccino. Another option is to park at Meadowwood Park and ride from there towards the same areas. If you’re trying to avoid roads entirely there’s the BWI loop and Baltimore-Annapolis path, which has road crossings and pedestrian traffic on it.
