Looking for a new saddle to replace the stock saddle on my Felt B12. I come from a road background and searched high and low finding the right saddle for me. I ended up choosing a Selle Italia SLC and couldn’t be happier. It seems to fit me perfectly. So, should I just purchase another Selle Italia SLC and put it on my Felt B12 or is there something about riding in the aero position that would lead me to trying out different tri-specific saddles? Thanks for your thoughts!
While the old adage ‘don’t fix what isn’t broken’ may apply here, you have the benefit of trying your Italia SLC saddle first. If you find that it isn’t comfortable in an aero position for extended periods of time, I would recommend looking at the Adamo Racing saddle. I have one and it lives up to the hype.
I think you’ll find the SLC uncomfortable when you’re in the aero bars, but you never know. Throw in on your tri bike and go for a ride. Selle Italia makes a tri saddle, the NT1, that has a thick, padded nose with gel in it that you might like if the SLC is uncomfortable.
I own an SLC and find it comfortable until I get too much weight on the nose of the saddle and I think that’s the issue you’ll have on your tri bike.
I think one of the things I like about my SLC is that I’m able to really sit back on the saddle on my sit bones. When I’m in that position, the saddle is very comfortable for me. So, on a tri-bike, does the aero position change my position on the saddle? Will I not be on my sit-bones? It sounds like most people here actually sit on the nose of the saddle?!
Sorry if these seem like obvious questions. I’m still waiting on my Felt B12, so I can’t just try it out yet.
You’re going to have more weight on the nose of the saddle and that’s why I think you’ll find the SLC uncomfortable. The nose is very unforgiving. But you never know. Different saddles work for different people. A lot of people like the Fizik Arione saddle and I think it’s like sitting on a 2x4. It’s horrible.
I have a SLC on my road bike and I love it… on the other hand, I had one on my Tri bike, I had an SLC and it was extremely uncomfortable so I went with an Adamo ISM Race and even though it took about 100 miles to get used to, it’s been great.

Depending on how low and steep you ride, a road saddle that works great on a road bike can be terrible on a tri bike. I ride steep and moderately low, and my Specialized road saddle was horrible. I switched to the AirStryke, and its a lot better, although I’m going to give the Adamo a try later this year.
if your road bike fits well, get down in the front of the drops and bend your elbows. get as low as you can. Stay there a long time. if it feels good then this saddle may work for you.
Lance! Is it true that you are going to do an Ironman?!
