I was talking to a friend of mine after taking a pretty bad spill the other day and he mentioned that after cleansing the road rash he would coat it in zinc oxide and then cover it with gauze and tegaderm. He said that it is far less painful and helps the abrasions heal much more quickly. I have always used neosporin and gauze, but being in a lot of pain and second guessing myself, is there any wisdom in my friends words?
Yeah, works great. What works even better is an Unna Boot. You can get them at medical supply stores. It is basically a pre-pasted gauze wrap with zinc oxide (and often other stuff like calamine). Just wrap it on! Goes on kinda “wet” though, so you will need to put an Ace wrap or something over it.
