Road Rash Treatment

What product(s) do you use to treat roadrash? I’ve read about various skin or burn treatment care items. I figure it’s better to have such on hand rather then wait until I need it. Entering 4th year of training/racing and (knock on wood) have not needed it yet. But, just feel like my numbers coming.

I like Brave Soldier. Some others have mentioned some other products as well, so I’m sure they’ll chime in. Hope you never need it.

Tegaderm. Clean the wound, apply Tegaderm, leave it alone. New pink skin in a week.

I second the Tegaderm. Put it on a fresh wound with no scabs and just leave it alone.

Another vote for Tegaderm. Scrub area with antiseptic wash, then apply. Allows you swim and shower with no problems.

After taking a spill last year and skinning up almost my whole right side I went home, got in the shower and cleaned everything up best I could. Since I had not had a tetanus shot in a long time I went ahead and got one. If you want to heal with as little scarring as possible you need to keep the wounds from drying out so that they heal from the inside out. I kept them moist with neosporin and kept them covered until they were close to being completely healed. The road rash I had went through several layers of skin (down to the white meat) and they took quite a while to heal completely. If you let them scab over you will almost certainly be left with some nasty scars; mine are almost unnoticeable.

Ditto on the Tegaderm. We used it in the ER all the time.

And for the REALLY hardcore, go with Duoderm. It’s thicker, a little stretchy, and designed for diabetics’ bedsores or something. It’s really spendy, though.

Yup - Tegaderm is good, Duoderm and the like (Exoderm, etc.) is better still. Keeps the wound clean, moist and gives a nice little cushion that helps some (esp since the rash is often on the knee or hip). I carry some all the time and my roadie buds usually come a runnin’ if they go down :frowning:

i had a BAD road rash a few weeks ago, this is what i did. First you cannot wrap it with just gauze. so thats out of the question. I used the vasoline gauze from work but it did not work very good. I did not sleep for a week cuase the itching and the pain of the nerve endings being exposed. during that week however I was able to wrap it , I took a zip lock bag, cut a piece out to fit leg, then put Neosporin on it and wrapped tight. It still hurt like hell but I could put pants on. I could still train because it just went numb. i did a 20 miler ,and a race with this rash BUT HERE IS THE KICKER I was going to a 4 day music festival with all the skin on my lower leg missing, hmmmm not good dirty, sun pain. I purchased NU SKIN and sprayed it on, amazing it covered it up no more pain and I had a nice barrier over the rash. I wish I had done it sooner!! I re applied every day and when I got back I had to wash and pick the nu skin off but man I was healed!!!

yes the tagaderm is awesome as well
.

you are shaving right?

Shave…yes I do.

Not only does it make me feel fast, it makes me feel clean and, reminds me its race time.

Tegaderm works if you need to keep swimming. I just went through this as I picked up some pretty bad road rash a few weeks out from a 1/2 IM.

The only problem with tegaderm is it can get expensive. In the course of about 16 days I went through 8 sheets costing about $35. In theory I guess you can put it on and leave it but I found in practice you have to keep changing it as it starts filling up with liquid, leaking, and peeling off(especially if you’re very active).
