Hey guys. Took a nasty fall on the bike yesterday. I have a March 1st marathon coming up. Training has been awesome on the run. I am cross training on the bike just to keep things fresh. My right leg is RAW…any idea how long before I can run again?

Assuming you don’t have any deep cuts or bad bruises, I would start running as soon as you can take the pain. The worst part about running for me was getting in and out of my running clothes. Once I started running I was fine.
Just don’t swim. It hurts like hell and will take forever to heal if you swim.
I had a different crash where the road rash wasn’t as bad but I had a bad bruise on my hip. I had to take off running for a week.
So I guess the answer is…it depends.
How it going Bob? Thx for the response. I try to stay away from Advil but at this point I need a little help. How long did it take into the run before you felt better? Mile or two?

Yeah, probably a mile or so. Like I said, the worst part was getting dressed. My bad road rash was mostly on my arms, shoulder and side. I ran without a shirt for a while because it hurt like hell when the shirt rubbed against the road rash. It happened to me in the summer so I had that option. I still had to wear shorts though… and it took a mile or two to stop thinking about the pain. I think I might have taken 1 day off because it hurt so bad getting dressed the next morning I felt like I was going to puke. Day 2 was a little better so I ran.
If you’re that worried about it, take a day or two off. It won’t hurt you. Be sure all the dirt and grit is gone. Apply Bacitracin a few times a day. STAY OUT OF THE WATER. This is the mistake I made.

I crashed in April or May and lost alot of skin. There was literally nothing left of my bib shorts on the left side. I rode about 48 hours later, and was almost completely healed within 6-8 days. I re-bandaged every 12-24 hours with alot of neosporin (I went through 6-8 tubes I think).
I do remember my road rash would throb for a good minute when I went from sitting to standing. It didn’t really affect me on the bike, but I’m not a runner so I’m not sure how running would have been.

non-stick gauze pads w/ neosporin for a few days until it quits oozing, and then pick up some Tegaderm from Walgreens or CVS and it’ll heal up in no time.
Seems like general consensus on what I have been reading is moist route is the way to go. Thx for sharing guys!
Get some Pain free Band aid wash (wallgreens, wallmart carry it) pour some on a wash cloth dab it on the rash. It will numb it put on clothes and go run. Works great especially when you shower later. The most important part of my crash kit for bike races.
Please help with ideas to reduce the swelling on my hands. Did my best last night to clean it up but I still have gravel in my hands…and they are swollen…hurts fing big time

That is a tough one…I’ve torn up my hands relatively bad (I rarely race with gloves), but not like that. You may want to go to a doctor to have it thoroughly cleaned out. I had a buddy with relatively mild road rash this year, and it got infected. He had to go on some seriously strong antibiotics that made him sick for days.

Btw, non stick pads will stick. If they stick you won’t want to change them often enough. I used some coconut oil we have lying around with the neosporin and it worked to keep it from sticking. Kept it covered about 2 weeks. Still very visible a few months later though.

Best to clean it out within 5 minutes of getting the rash (if there is a next time), due to the pain-relieving adrenaline.

I’d have to agree with the “thoroughly cleaning” comment. May want to see a Dr. if you can’t do it yourself. I had x-rays in the ER of some of the bad spots to be sure there were no small pebbles lodged in there somewhere. Then I had the whole area scrubbed with a brush. It was excruciatingly painful. I made them give me narcotics but it didn’t help. The Dr. said that even a few small stone chips could get infected quick. All of this may have been overkill but I left knowing the wounds were clean. Good luck. You’ll be fine in a week or so.
Edit: I crashed on a chip sealed road, which may have been the reason for overkill cleaning process.
Same happened to me in early November. My back, butt, knee, elbow, and wrist were scraped. I got some Tegaderm and went running two days later. Bad idea. I hadn’t realized that I also pulled my hip flexor in the crash. I ended up going to the ER and the Dr. gave me crutches and told me to stay off my feet for a few days. I did, however, get back up and running within 8 days and ran a 1/2 marathon in three weeks.
It was a slow week that felt like it would never end, but it did. Again, buy lots of Tegaderm and make sure that you didn’t hurt anything else before you run.
Holy shit…just took a shower…more painful than the wipeout yesterday!!!
Tegaderm is your friend. It’ll help the road rash heal properly and won’t give you a dry, itchy scab. For a bad crash I had a few years ago I was able to run a week later, but I didn’t swim for about three weeks - until the road rash had really closed up completely. Still have the scars on my shoulder, hip and forearm from that one!
If you didn’t see my post above that is why you get the pain free band aid wash. One you can scrub and scrub to get it clean, and the most important part you can take a pain free shower.
Just used it…works awesome!!! Thank you!
Your welcome.
It is always in my bag when I go to races just in case

From the Neosporin warning label:
Do not use
if you are allergic to any of the ingredientsin the eyesover large areas of the body
This is because the neomycin in it is nephrotoxic when it is absorbed into the bloodstream. If you’re going to do that, use Polysporin instead. It is the same product as Neosporin, only without the neomycin.
