Road Race sabotaged in MD

A road race in southern maryland was apparently screwed with before the race. Apparently someone put tacks all over the road in different spots (especially in turns) which caused a number of crashes. One guy that went down had a helmet cam on and I am sure you can find it on youtube. I saw the footage last night on the news. The race took place in Leondardtown in St. Mary’s County of Maryland.

Some poor guy broke his elbow! and I am sure a lot of guys messed up their bikes really bad.

Just sad that someone would willingly do that-and probably stayed around to watch the whole mess

It’s becoming more and more common.

I wonder if leaving something larger for the cars of the locals after an event will dissuade them from doing this in the future.

Here is a link to the news story and the crash.

That’s totally effed up. I don’t need any help crashing in races.

Probably some fatty…

Wasn’t that Bjarne Moller off the front on a breakaway?

Wow. I have ridden those roads, that is just pathetic. I have had full cups of soda, beer cans, beer bottles, a piece of brick, ect., thrown at me in southern Maryland. It is pathetic, especially since I am very respectful of other cars, but the idiot redneck level is overwhelming. I could go all day about this topic, but I will try to stay off the soap box.

Someone should lay tire spikes in front of the drive-thru at the local McDonald’s. See how they like it.

That area of Southern Maryland is another world entirely, unfortunately this doesn’t surprise me.

It’s pretty down there, but being in that area is like going back in time. And it may be Maryland, but you are in the South in southern MD.

Funny, 'cuz I live in the South and I’ve never heard of this happening anywhere down here.

Happened at Tour of the Gila this year too. Luckily, no one went down there. It really is quite sad and pathetic that people would stoop to this level. If they ever catch the slimy bastards that do this, I think they should be tried for attempted murder. Just my opinion though…

Didn’t someone shoot at you not so long ago?

Didn’t someone shoot at you not so long ago?

Well … OK. But he didn’t throw tacks down in the road ahead of me.

I’m not saying we don’t have our incidents down here, but the “Yankee” attitude reflected in the post to which I responded seemed to come from a place of ignorance. I’m a yankee and I’ve been living in the deep South since 1993. There are plenty of fine folks down here and, aside from a very small handful of incidents over nearly 200,000 miles of riding, people have been very courteous to me. The “natives” down here tend to be very courteous people by nature. They just don’t abide Yankees with superiority complexes.

Someone did the same thing at IM Louisville last year.

I remember someone laid carpet tacks on the Queen K for Ironman about 20 years ago or so

I totally agree. Besides, about 4 weeks ago when out biking I got a lemon thrown at me hitting my ear so hard that I thought my ear drum busted. This happened in manhattan, so I guess that counts as Yankee land. I saw some 13 year old kids running away.

Whoa whoa whoa, back up. Yankee superiority complex? Are you kidding me?

I went to school in southern Maryland and lived there for 4 years, so I speak of the area from personal experience, not from ignorance as you so accused me.

While your natives may be “courteous people by nature” (I guess your positive stereotypes are allowed while my negative ones are not), that was not my experience from most of the pickup driving folk in Southern Maryland.

And with regards to my comment about being in the south in southern Maryland, I was just speaking of the area generally. Many people think of Maryland as a mid-atlantic/northeast state, but southern Maryland is whole different place (complete with Confederate Memorial Park).

where are you from? I have been living in La Plata area for 6 years. I am originally from bucks county, pa and I miss home.

It is sad…all they have here are liquor stores (drive through for crying out loud!), mattress stores, bail bond store, and drug stores.

what does that tell you about life here!

although, it is funny to me that there is also a small population of amish!

most of the pickup driving folk in Southern Maryland.

Now you’ve gone on and exposed yerself as a Yankee elitist.

Ya’ll can say what you will, but you can’t hide your roots.

I was in the P-1-2 race that had the video footage which made the news.

The tack-throwers were at it all day; race volunteers did their best to sweep the roads clear of tacks as soon as flatted-out riders discovered the tacks lodged in their tires. Despite their efforts, it became apparent that the tack-throwers were hanging out somewhere at the course, walking around and discreetly littering the course with the carpet tacks.
