i currently ride some shimano tri shoes and want to get a pair of regular road biking shoes. i have big wide feet, 11 2E in my NB running shoes, so cycling shoes tend to get pretty painful. Anyone have a shoe reccomendation that will fit me?
These are going to be used primarily for training in chilly (not Michigan cold) weather and don’t need to be too high end. I’d like to keep the cost under 150 if possible.
I also have 2E feet, and got Supergo Revel Carbon shoes. Sales people told me that was a good shoe for wide feet, and after about 800 miles on them, I’d agree.
ugh, the tribulations of having wide feet. I wear asics 9, 4EEEE. After going through a number of shoes here are my opinions:
shimano tr-01: stock width, the perfect shoe. I think the sides are very supple and give. For my feet, perfect. The newer tr-02 uses a different sole, so I don’t know how the fit will be. Friend of mine in 2EE’s does like them. I believe I have a pair of 43.5
sidi genius 3 “mega”: the wider version of the genius. I had it for a year and would get agonizing toe pains. I think the problem with this shoe is the sole is made the same size, and there is more leather on top. Problem is, the leather stretched so much that my toe would be over the sole and dig into the edge of it. painful after 3hrs+ or hard efforts.
shimano 151E: the wider version of the new shimano road sole. VERY wide, my feet were swimming in the size 43. I got a pair of 42’s and the width was ok but the length seemed a bit long. Incredibly stiff on around the sides of the toe box. no-go. Also, I found that with my normal sized ankles, it never “fit” right - my heel would slide.
dmt ultimax: regular width, damn, the heel cup was the most comfortable fit. Felt decent until one day I got stuck in pouring rain and they never felt the same since. I put them away, tried to sell them to a friend, but got them back. I’ll them again once it gets cooler. 42.5 (I think)
rocket 7 customs: Yes, I was so upset before trying the TR-01’s, I ordered a pair of these. Made the casts with a physio friend of mine; thought we followed the directions properly but when I got them, I found them SO stiff that they hurt. More painful than any other shoe I ever had. The shipping costs of the casts, shoes etc. was so ridiculous (I’m in Canada) that I just didn’t bother sending them back for a refit etc. Construction was mediocre. Heel cup was too soft and wide, (especially considering how much focus my physio put into moulding that part) and overall fit wasn’t great.
