Riding to Pacifica, CA

What road-bike routes are there to take to Pacifica - from the north or the east? (San Francisco/Colma/Millbrae/any BART station)

The only thing I have with Pacifica on it is the South Bay Krebs map - and it’s kind of indecipherable for that area.

Thanks!

Take Sharp Park Road to Highway 1. It’s I think only a couple hundred feet of climbing to get from the Bay side to the ocean side.

Is the Grabtown Fire Road road-tire worthy?

I would but there’s only a few mtb routes around here that I think are not road tire worthy when dry. It’s mostly groomed and sandy going up for about 20 minutes and down 10 minutes if you take it easy. There is a rough section about 1/4 mile long on the descent but I just rode the brakes the whole way down out of caution. A lot of it looks like this - http://www.flickr.com/...8756/in/photostream/ but not all of it. I don’t know the attraction but there were a few guys riding downhill MTB rigs while I went up every time I’ve been there. I geotagged those so you can use the hybrid map mode to look at how to get there.

It’s pretty hard doing it from Millbrae, just saying, most likely not feasible. I have seen a crazy dude try it by just going along 280. Although you’re supposed to get off towards Crystal Springs, he kept going

There’s a sign that says bikes allowed on a couple of the 280 on ramps IIRC, we just rode on the shoulder. Or I could be delusional about the signs. Depends on your path to get to Sharp.

Depending on the on ramp bikes are allowed on 280. I’ve ridden on 280 to ride north on the way to SF, specifically the Great Highway, for about a mile. Sort of sketchy but I usually do it early in the morning so there isn’t much traffic.

.

Is there a good bike route (quiet) from a particular BART station to Sharp Park Road? I don’t care which BART station…Just want a safe and relatively pleasant route.

Looks like Sharp Park Road spits you out onto the Highway 1 right where the Highway 1 is about to turn from a freeway into a boulevard? You don’t have to ride the freeway part of it for very long? (This assumes you want to ride south into the town of Pacifica.)

My memory is there is a very wide shoulder or low traffic on highway 1 at this point, and if one wishes to progress past Devil’s Slide going south, one turns left at a light in town (clearly marked as the bike route?) to get to the fire roads that go over Devil’s Slide. The trail at first is paved going under eucalyptus trees that turns into sandy fire road that is narrow for fire trucks, wide for bikes. Sadly google street views seems to end before the interesting parts.

I’ve done this. Sharp Park Road dumps out onto surface streets on the seaward side of 1. Head south and you’ll merge onto 1 as it stops being a freeway. Turn north and you can roll right into town. I haven’t been over there since the tunnel was finished. Devil’s Slide southbound on a Sunday afternoon was interesting (to say the least), what with a brutally cracked road surface and lots of gawking drivers. I’d bet the fire roads would be a lovelier experience.

I used to live in Pacifica and ride my bike over to SFSU. You can take bart to Daly City then ride down John Daly Blvd to Skyline BLVD. Make a left on Skyline Blvd and ride until you get to the 99 Ranch Market. Then make a right and go one block into the neighborhood and make a left on Skyline Drive. This road will take you all the way down into Pacifica while avoiding highway 1.

This. I think you’re referring to Hickey Blvd…

Grew up 3 blocks from there, brings back some memories…
