Hey Fellow Slowtwitchers,
We are taking family vacation to Hilton Head in a few weeks and I was wondering if anybody can tell me about riding opportunities at Hilton Head Island. Are there any decent bike shops? I just need to decide if it is worth taking my bike or not? Thanks in advance.

Give Al an email at info@gotrisports.com. His store is on the back part of the island near Sea Pines. Also, check out his website - www.gotrisports.com - he has a few good running routes also.
Also, I think there is a ride that leaves from the ‘Bike Doctor’ on Tuesday and Thursday night at 6 or 6:30. Its an awesome place to ride if you go with the right people and stay off the busy roads. Get into the big plantations and it is generally real quiet and nice. Hope this helps.

I was there 2 weeks ago. There were several bike shops. I brought my road bike but ended up renting a beach cruiser. There are a lot of bike paths throughout the island but there are constant driveways crossing the path. It would be unusual if I didn’t have to stop every tenth of a mile at times. It was fun and the family biked everywhere but it would be hard to get in a workout. On the plus side when the tide was out we would ride on the wide, firm beach sand and it was awesome. It was a great trip.

Definitely get up with Al at Go Tri Sports. Good guy, supports the local racing scene and knows the area very well. With all of the growth now, in my opinion you really have to get off the island to get in good road rides. The beach however is perfect at low tide for mountain bike rides. My family has been going down for Thanksgiving for 16 years now and we spend most of our time riding our mountain bikes on the beach and some of the less interupted trails. I have not been there in the summer for about 10 years, but then I had to get up at dawn to ride the beach. Just too many people later in the day. If you ride the trails with fewer crossings, it is a good bike handling workout with the many twists. Have fun.
I’ve been going to Hilton Head Island for over 25 years. While there are a few rides you can hook up with, (check with Alfred at Gotrisports, which is a great tri shop by the way), I usually bring my mountain bike and ride the beach. I usually do the Westin to the end of South Beach on Sea Pines and back, about a 32 mile ride that gives a decent workout due to the winds you tend to encounter. Running on the beach is also a great work out. Enjoy and say hi to Alfred for me.

P.S. Try Red Fish, Santa Fe Cafe and Chaley’s L’Etoile Vert for dinner. Great restaurants.
