Rhabdomyolysis from one workout session?!

Don’t worry yourselves, this isn’t me!

A friend just sent me this Vice article, where the author purports to have developed rhabdomyolysis from a single kettlebell session. The whole article smells like bullshit to me, but this one particular anecdote sounds like complete and utter nonsense. Thankfully, I don’t have any experience of rhabdo, but I thought I’d put it to you guys: can an extremely unfit individual give themselves rhabdo from a single workout session?!

Isnt that what exercise-induced rhabdo is? Going apeshit craycray for one session, causing so much muscle damage that you get yourself into the ER. It isnt something that you build into, or at least that was what I understood.

Yes. Absolutely possible. I did a cross fit style work out with a female elite triathlete where we did multiple pull ups. It was her first time doing this type workout. She ended up in ED with rhabdo from this single work out. Also my dog got rhabdo. The vet said very fit animals, race horses and greyhounds are also prone to get it. Very interesting condition IMO.

Yup.

One really (stupidly) hard and too long workout. Started out with t-rex arms and then they started swelling up. Made for a weird week.

I got rhabdo from having surgery for 9 hours. Leg got strained being stuck in the same position the whole time.

My niece was invited to a cross-fit gym and was goaded into timed pull-ups with everyone pushing her to go hard/do more. She destroyed her triceps and ended up in the hospital for days, right on the edge of needing dialysis. For months the back of her upper arms were just floppy skin sacks. Almost back to normal now, and needless to say, will never step foot into a cross-fit gym again.

She’s not unfit, but athletics is not her priority. She’s wiry strong, like a rock climber would be.
