Reynolds Strike

These wheels look good with a 66mm rim depth. Does anyone have experience with these wheels?

Sweet wheels. I have a friend (a 120-lb female) who trains on them daily. They’re fast, according to her.

I’m picking up a set on Thursday. I’ll keep you posted!

serious question:

has anyone ever bought a set of neat fancy wheels, ridden on them

and reported back anything other than this?

You mean the third person’s experience with the item?

Me. I was overwhelming underwhelmed after I bought the Zipp 999 wheelset.

no, he meant the review about it being “fast”
.

That’s an impressive psychology, usually the more you pay the more committed you are to pretending you like it!

haha

lol. I’m grateful they hold their value well, even after a season of use. Made ditching them a breeze. Picked up a PowerTap. Best investment for MY performance I’ve ever made. Maybe not as sexy though.

FWIW: I don’t think the Zipps or any sexy wheel is a waste of money. However, I think it is a waste of MY money considering my ability (or inability).

PS - I’m picking up a disk cover for my PT wheel. Does this count?

My friend had problems with Reynolds internal nipples. Granted he is a bigger rider and was on the Assaults but the problems were consistent and we had a very difficult time getting nipples from Reynolds. He might have just gotten a bad batch. He sold the wheelset to his friend who is much lighter and there are no problems to be reported since the switch. They most likely improved this wheelset since the assaults. But other than that they are really nice. Nothing wrong with a light, deep rimmed, full carbon clincher that Reynolds calls their everyday wheelset.

These wheels are very similar to the SDV66, I believe the rim is exactly the same however the Strikes have a generic hub compared to the DT Swiss hubs on the SDV66.

The Strikes are a bit heavier as well.

I have 4k miles on a pair of Assaults. The rims are great, and the hubs are adequate. They are not as good as Dura Ace hubs, Campy, Kings, or DT 240, but not off by a lot. If you are looking for a light clincher deep wheel, then this is a good buy.

I was looking at getting a set of full carbon clinchers, but am worried about the lip of the wheel cracking easily when getting a flat or hitting a hole in the road. Anyone ever have problems with this?

Tell me you love me:

This is a great site.

On my Assaults, I have hit quite a few potholes and even got a pinch flat 2 weeks ago when I went straight into a tunnel to the center of the earth. So far no rim damage on them.

So I’m torn between the Assaults and the Strikes. If it is a real real windy day, do the deeper dish wheel really affect you? I mean its less than 20mm between the Assualt and Strikes, can a real windy day really affect you?

So which wheelset would everyone suggest? My LBS says the Assault are basically a great wheelset for all around riding, etc.

Assaults.

Easy to use stock tubes rather than relying on extenders. Practicality wins over the margin gain (or loss) of a deeper wheel, IMO.

But…who am I to talk as I’ll ride a disc in any conditions. But, for a road wheel…it’s a 404 tubular or Assault (clincher obviously).

Good luck.

As far as a disc, you mind telling me how a disc feels in wind? I mean if its really windy, I keep hearing how a disc doenst really blow you around, only the front wheel.

I’m thinking about buying the assaults and then the clincher disc wheel, eventually.

All relative, IMO.

I’ll ride a disc in any tt or tri condition. But, I’d never let my girlfriend (er, uh…ex-girlfriend) ride a disc. She’s 108 lbs. While I’m sure others will chime in a say their 8 year old daughter rides a disc at 55 lbs, to me it’s a matter of being practical, not being scientifically faster. Yes…a disc, by design, is going to catch wind. Will it toss you around? Yes…that’s the point (aside from being frontally more aerodynamic). It’s a matter of whether it will be beyond your riding preference.

“My” opinion is that a 45ish cm wheelset plus a disc is a GREAT investment. Yet, it’s just a matter of time until someone says you’re better off with a tri spoke set / disc.

Choice is a great thing.

Diesel, you are the man. Because I just bought 2 P2’s this week, as me and my gf just celebrated 1 year anv. Anyway’s, my whole thinking process, was I wanted to get an Assault wheelset and in about 6 months get a Reynold’s disc so that me and her can swap out wheels. We are only doing 1 race together, as I’m working on 1 half towards the end of the year, and she is building up for oly’s only.

Thanks for your info.

So what do you think about an Assault in the front and disc in the back? Is that sweet setup?
