Will be running a Reynolds strike up front this season (wheelcover/PT rear) and wondering if anyone has any experience with what is a great mate for the wheel? as well as a good set of brake pads that wont break the bank.
Per Reynolds site they have the rim width at 20.4 I believe, I have a 20 mm PR3 with low miles I could use or thinking maybe the R4 when its out. Any suggestions?
I can tell you the Bonty Aerowing TT / R4 is not the greatest fit with the Strikes. The width of the rim bead is wider than the wing and leaves a flat edge in the wind. I suppose it might still be better than a standard tire like the Veloflex Record (which I also have and works well on the Strike)…but the tire/rim interface is not nearly as nice as it is on a Hed H3 or some other rims I have.
I would definitely use a Veloflex Record over the PR3. On the other hand, dual PR3s on the strikes is a very nice every day combination if you’re the type that rides carbon wheels every day or even often.
FWIW…despite the issue noted above, I have run the Aerowing TTs (R4s) on my strikes for 1.5 years now and they are still running great. I use latex tubes as well.
Most of 2010’s came w/ the blue pads as well. It’s true you have to use them on the newer ones but for the older rey reys they are reverse compatible and supposedly the best compound they’ve created yet.
I use a 23 grand prix 4000 and it mates up quite nicely.
I ran 2010 Strike’s and tried some Pro3 Race Michelins but they were way too tight getting on, definitely needed tire levers and some struggles. Switched to Schwalbe Ultremo DD and went on very easy (and no flats all year!!).
that’s a 23 mm clincher on the stryke? that fit looks really good. what manufacturer and model tire? the strykes are on super sale at competitive so i’ve been debating.

Use the Vittoria’s in a 22mm or 23mm with the Strikes. It is not recommended to use less than a 22mm tire. Also buy some of the blue cryo pads from Reynolds they’re the bomb.
My first Vittoria Evo CX (320 TPI, the newer “better” ones) got shredded after just a few rides. The replacements have had hundreds of happy miles without a puncture so far.
I have Conti 4000s with Michelin latex tubes on my 2010 Strikes. A bit tight when first fitted but took them off to fit some topeak valve extenders, and second time round I fitted them without levers. So the initial stretch obviously helped. No punctures so far and had none with the Contis on my Ksyriums after a couple of thousand k’s either. Wheels came with the Reynolds blue brake pads.
