Hit a pothole hard on my final long ride before Vineman–10 days ago. Hard enough to blow the tire and I was sure I’d broken my carbon rim. Looked for cracks, found none. Fixed flat, rode onward. Whew. Until yesterday–my LBS noticed (while doing other stuff) a bulge in one side of the rim, up near the tire. As if, maybe, when the tire compressed before popping, it pushed the side of the rim outward a little, causing a deformity. Any clue how much I should I worry about this, or if it can be fixed? LBS has taken photos and sent them to Reynolds, but no word back yet. I suppose I could just pop in the rear wheel from road bike, and race on that. Pity, though.
Clincher or tubular? If it is a clincher rim, then I would advise against using a rim that has any type of bulging area near or on the brake track. Too easy for the tire to pop off.
If it is tubular, then your only issue will be pulsing during braking (assuming the wheel otherwise is still strong).
Clincher. So that’s the worry, huh? Tire popping off?
Who knows for sure what will happen. Without a picture it is hard to assess. But that would be my worry if I had your wheel.
