Review: Red Bull Cola

Our enterprising Red Bull beverage distributor from Premium Brands just sampled us on the new Red Bull Cola.

Red Bull started as a niche beverage company with their energy drink in 1997. Developed by former toothpaste maven Dietrich Mateschitz from a Thai derivative called “Krating Daeng” to combat jet lag, the beverage went on to establish an entire “energy drink” category. One of Red Bull’s principles, Chaleo Yoovidhya, is listed by Forbes Magazine as the 292nd wealthiest man on earth (source: Wikipedia).

Red Bull Cola is the first new product introduction for Red Bull GmbH since Diet Red Bull. Red Bull Cola is an all natural ingredient soft drink, not an energy drink. It is intended to share shelf space with beverage titans Pepsi and Coca-Cola, a tall order for a niche beverage. The “schtick” for Red Bull Cola is a very different taste and all natural ingredients. This combined with unique packaging (can shape) differentiate Red Bull Cola from the other entries in the crowded cola category.

Red Bull Cola starts with a subtle, slightly less sweet flavor, somewhat bland compared to Pepsi and Coke. If you have had cola beverages in other countires, particularly southern Europe and the Arab nations then you know the taste from the local soft drink labels- less powerful cola wise but powerfully sweet. This will likely be an acquired taste for U.S. cola drinkers who are accustomed to the very strong cola flavors of Coke and Pepsi products. It is more subtle like the non-U.S. local cola mixtures. I am not accustomed to non-diet soft drinks so they all taste very sweet to me.

Ingredients listed on the Red Bull website for Red Bull Cola include coca leaf, kola nut, lemon and lime, clove (!), cinnamon, cardamom (what?), *pine *(!), galangal (never heard of it either…), vanilla, ginger, mace (the stuff you spray in a rioter’s face?), cacao (mmmm), licorice, orange and mustard seeds oddly enough. This produces the subtle, complex taste. There is little sweet or nasty aftertaste. The sugar “bonk” from Red Bull cola is hefty though, I drank a sample can this morning on an empty stomcah and am already a bit laggy, ready to chase it with a coffee oor a regular Red Bull Energy Drink.

The can is nicely designed with an attractive red/silver/blue label and a small opposing bull trademark. The pull tab is the most attractive feature of the can since it is red anodized and has a miniature charging bull relief cut out of the tab. Nice touch.

One can of Red Bull Cola has 130 calories with 31 grams of sugar. All carbohydrates are simple.

I like Red bull Cola as I do the energy drink and I think this is an interesting introduction into the crowded beverage category. I do think that Red Bull Cola will not do well among Coke and Pepsi drinkers accustomed to more traditional U.S. origin cola soft drinks.

we got some samples at the deli I work at and I tried a shot of it…gotta say I was expecting something radically different but it tasted like cola to me
I read the ingredients, looking for tuarine, 300mg caffeine or something but it was just normal cola
I don’t drink sugar soda so I won’t be using this but I hope they do well because lord knows it’s hard to find ANYTHING in the store without HFCS
.

Really, I had some the otherday and thought it tasted vile!!

But then I’m a diet coke addict, so most of my taste buds are dead anyway!

Tom, they are already selling this in grocery stores here in San Diego. I tried a can earlier this week. I’m a big Coca-Cola fan, that along with Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby ice cream are my two biggest indulgences.

I agree with you, I think the sweetness level is on par with non-US soft drinks that are flavored with sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. In other words, its not as sweet. I thought the flavor was “too complex”…there were some things going on there that I wouldn’t typically associate with a cola.

I also didn’t like the aftertaste. I guess I’ll be sticking with good ol’ Coke.

The can is cool though.

Did i read that right? natural ingredientsin Red Bull Cola?! yeah right natural.

according to www.redbullcola.com, its all natural.

Is Coke sweetened with HFCS in the States?

Yup…HFCS in the states…

That’s why I buy Mexico coke at sams and costco – sugar baby!

…of course that doesnt stop me from drinking the fountain stuff when I eat out…

Ron

Well that explains it. I always wondered why I didn’t like American cola. That and the chocolate. Blech lol

Never tried this Red Bull Cola. I also a “Coke fiend”??? My all time favorite is European coke, which is definitely not the same as Mexican coke, albeit also made with real sugar. Mexican coke here is very hard to find, but supposedly we can get it during Passover???

I have been drinking “Boylans” (made locally in Moonachie NJ) cola, which tastes really nothing like Coke or Pepsi. It definitely has a complex taste not similar to what one is used to.

I must admit, US Fountain Soda can taste so GOOD… especially with a real salty Chipotle burrito

Addendum: Don’t drink three in rapid succession on an empty stomach. Too much “field testing”.

Gimme a Jolt Cola (all the sugar and twice the caffeine).

If you go to Chipotle dressed as a burrito today, you get one for free. FYI.

Caffeine content (mg) per 8 ounces or 12 ounces?

Little, slender, “hip” 8.4 oz (250 mL) size can or other?

Prospects for Red Bull Cola Girls?

They still make that stuff? Went to a party once in Potsdam, NY where it was 151 rum mixed with Jolt Cola…felt like I was having four simultaneous heart attacks.

Let me get the can. Wait one please.

haha funny about the Burrito. I think it would take more than $5 in aluminum foil to dress me up as a burrito. Alas, we’ll be having homemade pizza with fresh tomatoes and broccoli vegetables this evening.

Tom,

If drinking Red Bull Cola is going to help you get that new Look reviewed faster then I say drink away.

I’m on it. About to send the four pack to its God now…

12 ounce can:

130 calories.

10 mg sodium.

31 grams carbohydrate.

31 grams sugars.

Caffeine from coffee beans according to label. Pasteurized, all natural flavors. It is labelled as having “No Artificial Ingredients”. The beverage is actually made in Switzerland.
