Retul Bike fit- $250?

Hi all! I’ve finally come to grips that buying my first legit Tri bike is dumb until I have a fit in place. I’m located in Memphis but travel up to Nashville often for work. I found Endeavor Performance (http://endeavorperformance.com/fit/bike-fit-pricing). Two Elementary questions:

  1. Is $250 a fair shake for the below?

  2. Can anyone speak to how thorough the list of bike brands/models with specific sizes that fit well was? I’m looking to buy used through Slowtwitch or maybe mybikeshop.com. Tired of seeing deals and not knowing if that would work for me.

Any insights are welcome!

I had a Retul fit by a highly regarded fitter about 4 years ago. Best money I’ve spent in triathlon thus far. The library of bike frames was pretty extensive. The main dimensional takeaway from that was stack and reach. Once you have those two figures you can shop around. Then if you find something used and are unsure, consult back to the fitter so see what they think. Sure they want you to buy one of their bikes but you did pay $250 for the fit. That’s a fair price for a Retul fit which can take hours to complete.

Right on. Exactly what I was hoping to hear. Thank you!

I highly recommend Todd at Endeavor Performance for your bike fit. I had some persistent right knee pain that I couldn’t get to go away with changes to saddle height/forward/aft and went to see him and he was able to get it resolved easily with shoe wedges.

I’m getting a fit done on 2/4 in the NYC tri-state area, very similar parameters to what you’ve listed. It’s costing me $350, so I’d say $250 is definitely fair!

Also, it is very dependent on the fitter. They could have all these tools and not know how to use them properly, then it might not be worth $250. If other’s recommend this guy then I’m sure you’ll be fine!

That’s great to hear. Thank you!

Todd is very thorough…I’m a fan. He’s worked with me on both my road and tri bikes. The output you get will allow you to pick frames that suit you.

Awesome. Hitting him up now, just waiting to hear back. Hopefully I can get in there Monday.

Appreciate it!

i co-sign this statement, Todd is the best fitter in all of Nashville… had my tri and road bike done him and my brother drove from West Palm Beach to TN for a fit there and it was “perfect”. went back time and time to adjust my fit and most times without a fee! Todd is a real cool dude!

I’m not saying do not get fit, do it, but if you are only getting fit to find correct size of the bike, not to perfect your position, you might save yourself a bunch by following guide on this site: http://www.slowtwitch.com/Bike_Fit/index.html )quite comprehensive and more than sufficient to buy the bike)

If your fitter allows (it should if not run) on come backs after you purchase the bike. 1-2 more sessions once you get more flexibility etc 150% worth the money.

Think about fit as work in progress, there is no perfect universal fit for ever, there is perfect fit for your current flexibility/fitness/event/distance/day of the week.

Ask as many questions as possible try to learn/understand

Appreciate the insight. I know it’ll come with at least one return visit after purchasing a bike to get dialed in etc. Part of me wishes I knew enough about this to self guide but i feel like i’m throwing darts in the dark. I think it’ll really help, especially knowing I can circle back once I purchase.

$250 is a typical price for a bike fit.

Bike fit is money well spent. There’s more seconds gained by a good bike fit than any of the bike gear purchases people incessantly discuss here on this forum. Not to mention improved comfort on the bike, or less danger of a repetitive stress injury particularly to the knees.

N-O-T in FL it isn’t a typical price! lol the lowest i’ve seen in any one part in FL is 275! Todd charge me 150 for my road bike and more less 250 for the TT bike… several times i went back after my initial fit with little to no charge!

I paid $350 in FL which included the pre-fitting for a number of selected bikes and post-fitting the new bike. Was it worth it? The post-fit was. But pre-fit only confirmed the size I new I needed. And the adjustability for for each of the frames made all of them within range of fitting me.

i had planned to revise an extend an article i wrote 4 years ago. (it needed updating.) after reading your post i moved it up in the editorial queue and it is linked to here, or just go to the front page.

was this fit wit ha retul or just simply measurements??? $350 for a measurements only fit is quite expensive!

Thanks for this Dan. I read the article and texted Todd (fitter) a few more questions. Here’s his response regarding stack/reach (attached). I get the vibe he’s on point and a few guys here have vouched. Appreciate your input.

It was Retul. Sorry

In my opinion, thats still relatively high and likely normal pricing in FL for sure!

  • video of the finished fit
  • your fit coordinates (as described in the article)
  • your pad x/y (to the rear of the pad, and to the center)
  • the equipment (saddle, aerobars) aboard which were generated your fit coordinates

that’s what you need to walk away with. and, make sure the fit was executed at your race power at least.

finally, your fit needs to be executed aboard a fit bike: retul, purely custom, guru, exit cycling. without the fit bike you’re wasting your time.

assuming the above is all adhered to and performed, you’re in good shape.
