Anecdotally this makes some sense…football, baseball, basketball, soccer drills all had us running backwards

Anyways thought it was interesting

For sports you have to be omnidirectional in your movement and that’s why it is practiced. You don’t need to do that walking down the street. I get the possible benefits but I also get that we don’t have eyes in the back of our heads.

Just imagine it becoming a fad though. People walking backwards down city streets!

Half of them already have their face buried in their phone and aren’t paying attention to where they are going, they may as well be going backwards too.

The biomechanics of ostrich leg movements are the same as us walking backwards.

They’re very speedy runners, so maybe they’re onto something.

Isn’t backwards walking supposed to be good for knee strength and stability?

My Real Property professor in law school lived in my neighborhood and he used to do a couple laps around the block backwards everyday.

He also refused to capitalize his given name and surname because he didn’t want to give his ‘slave name’ legitimacy.

He was a character.

I do think there are benefits to walking/jogging backwards as part of a warmup and/or mobility routine.

A big part of my dog’s TPLO recovery was walking backwards. Supposed to strengthen muscles supporting knees and abs. I’m going to go walk 10 laps around the house backwards just in case.

I follow a sports medicine guy online who focuses on knee strength for explosive performance improve improvement like vertical leap, etc. He swears by it, So do his athletes.

I noticed in that Brian Johnson live forever documentary, that was one of the exercises he was doing in the morning, dragging a weighted sled backwards

Exactly.

Used to do a group run where the route ended in a parking lot entrance that inclines up. I’d finish, and walk the incline backwards. Not for any particular benefit, but it felt good.

Also felt good to see the gap I put on others by the end of the run, or how far from the back of the pack I wasn’t :slight_smile:

I still do the backward finish when I run that route.

Very good, and it’s been known for a very long time in S&C circles. Incline or sled drag is more efficient in terms of strength development. I do some on a treadmill, with the motor turned off so I’m having to push more with each step.

Long time athlete, runner, triathlete now feeling the full effect of old age wrt to pounding on pavement and have taken to the water for all of my running. One length of the pool forward and one length backward. Swear by it being good for me.

But do you do it in an Ironman cap throwing a hissy fit if anyone wants to split the lane (flashbacks to my lifeguarding days…)

Wait a minute, Triathletes not wanting to share lanes? One reason to jump back in with the lap swimmers and start swimming again is to simply enjoy the facial expressions when joining 2 and asking for a circle swim.
No, I do my Kona shuffle jog in the shallowest part of the pool rec swim area without lane lines always being sure to play the burdened vessel and give way to all the random fun seekers however circuitous one length may then become.

I saw a similar story recently. So when I took my folks dog for a walk at my old school’s Oval I thought I’d give it a try.

Then promptly stood on shit. First time I laughed having stood on dog shit.

Yes, often used for rehab, warm up for lifters and such, especially good doing it uphill.
