Replacing internal shifter cable

I’m trying to replace a shifter cable on a 2011 Quintana Roo CDO.1. I can get the new cable to where it seems like it should be coming out, and then it won’t advance any further. Just to see, I also tried to thread it through from the back and was unable to. I’m thinking there may be an obstruction from the old cable, which broke. Ideas? Fixable by myself or should I give in and take it to the shop?

Something you probably already checked, but just in case…

I had this issue while trying to run a cable in my Giant Trinity. What had happened was that the end cap from the old cable housing had remained stuck at the point where the cable enters the frame. Luckily, I hadn’t pulled all the cable out, so I was able to tie a knot at the other end and pull it through to dislodge the piece that was stuck.

Thanks for the thought – end-cap was still on the cable. The cable had actually broken a few inches inside the housing. Original cables had rusted. So, I had to pull the old cable from both ends. Maybe this is the excuse to buy a new bike? Let’s see, $3 part or new bike?..

New bike is always the best option! Lol

I spent about 4 hours recabelling my bike last time because the FD cable guide had broken. I eventually had to remove the BB and with lots of swearing got everything back in place. I promised myself that next time the cable brakes I am buying a new bike rather than going through that again.

For real…

I learned this trick when rebuilding many Zipp 2001 framesets. Threading cables on these frames could be very difficult. This was basically the only way to thread the rear brake cable.

If you have trouble getting a cable to exit a frame, use a very small allen key in the far end of the hole/housing. Keep pressure on the cable and the allen key as you push the cable thorough. The cable will follow the allen key right out the hole.

Nice! Will def give this a try!!! Thanks.
