Replacing crank arms? Are there options?

It’s gotta be cheaper than buying a new crank, right? I have SRAM Red 175s and I want to try 170s (because that’s all the rage). Are there any sites that sell left AND right crank arms? I can only find left (non-drive).

This also doubles as a passive WTT post, so apologies for placing it in this forum.

huh?

I appreciate the thought that you obviously spent on your reply.

I have SRAM Red cranks now, curious if I can find replacement crank arms to keep the chain rings and BB but switch arm lengths.

Why would you need to replace the BB? And your answer is yes you can. Cool part is that one arm on its own is often 70% the cost of a crank set - so, your LBS will love you. You are looking at this ALL the wrong way. Just get a cheaper crankset WHOLE.

I do give you credit for one of the most…um…odd? Questions in a while.

Oh, and unless you have space issues with your legs hitting your chest - you wont notice.

Record, you’re killing me.

In short, thanks for telling me that they’re expensive. In long, how is this an odd question? It’s like asking: I need more saddle height, is it cheaper to replace a seat post or get a taller bike?

I want shorter crank arms - I can either buy a new shorter crank (with chain ring, bb, etc) or buy shorter aftermarket crank arms. I thought maybe someone would have a link.

Should I get 165s?

The industry standard is a crank"set" - trust me, it is just easier that way. But, if you get a super cheap crank (no reason not to) take the cheap chain rings off and install your Red rings…

That is not a bad deal on what is all in all a very nice crankset - and prices to experiment.

Uh, the color definitely clashes with my black group.

If you have enough patience you’ll be able to find just the arms on ebay but I doubt you’ll find reds anytime soon. I just picked up a pair of DA 170 arms for the very same purpose as I’m switching from 172.5 red cranks with q-rings to the 170’s. Anyways, keep searching and you’ll get lucky eventually but I’m guessing if you want arms only you’ll have better luck finding shimano arms as there are a ton of DA 7800 and similar arms that go up for auction all the time. I got my DA 7800 arms for $99 although I think I got lucky and even at $130+ it would have been a good deal.

If you want to buy new, you will have to buy the chainrings with the crank arms (bottom brackets are sold separately). The only way you will get the arms without chainrings is to buy second hand, but even then they will be hard to find.

At least you are on Campy!

That’s because the drive-side SRAM Red crank arm is integrated with the spider AND spindle. Replacing the ‘crank arms’ on a Red crank is the same as replacing everything but the chainrings.

And the BB bearings and cups.

Cheapest I’ve ever seen just the left was $175.00 so imagine your total cost for both would be $350 minimum. Just buy new set and sell your old. split the difference.

That’s part of the bottom bracket, not part of the crank. Although they do come with the crank in the non-BB30 versions.

For $175 change the left arm and see how you like it before going all in!

I looked into this once when I wanted to do the same thing for a fulcrum crank I have. After doing too much research on the Internet, I found the chainrings are very inexpensive compared to the entire crankset. Like I can get the chainrings for like 20USD apiece…hardly any savings. And no one will sell you the spider/crankarm combo (that I could find).

R10C’s thought of getting a cheaper crankset and just putting your Red chainrings actually seems pretty brilliant. Wish I’d thought of it!

You could also keep your eye on Bonktown/Chainlove…I’ve seen 170mm 2011 Red cranks on there for a decent savings.
