Replacement/Refund For Injured IM Canada Participant?

A friend who’s signed up for Ironman Canada was involved in an accident that basically tore up her left femur. One of those unfortunate incidents beyond our control. We’re thinking of offering to send in a replacement, which would be better than their partial refund; and less outrageous than asking for more refund.

Anyone know if that’s possible? Suggestions would be helpful too. TIA!

According to everything imna posts on their web sites and from others attempts no it’s not possible.
July 15 is deadline to get 150 bucks us or 200 cad
back…
Here is website.

that said wouldn’t hurt to ask I guess.

they will not allow it…if they did they would have to do it for everybody - and I guess it is like opening a can of worms

(however, I think they should allow it).

Sorry, your buddy is going to get sloppy seconds if he/she tries to not get screwed on this…the refund policy for accidents is insult to injury.

refund policy does stink! I was in the hospital and only got the very generous “partial refund”!

Sorry you will not make it…the policy does suck, but Graham needs to make sure he can pay for his sons Hockey.

Assuming you have regular entry but if you have a charity spot instead you can transfer that to next year or another race.

It is a shape you only get 150 back out of 450 or so.
Now Ironman New Zealand has a really good refund.
think entry is around 620 to 650 NZD and the refund
up until jan 10 is all but 155 so you get quite a bit back.

Sorry to hear about your friend & speedy recovery, I would be interested in taking over your friends hotel reservations, please email me at feviking@yahoo.com, thanks

Alrighty, we’ve written in to them, awaiting their reply. The “partial” refund is frustrating at best, have they grown numb to the race fees costs for an IM? Sure, organizing IMs aren’t cheap. Considering that this was to be her first IM, the amount she’d saved up for (race fees, transport, lodging, etc), and the long term commitment IMC required. And at the end, let’s add this on to the disappointment.

They should certainly have more accomodative measures for someone who has to drop out due to injury - show a little spirit of this sport.

Sure, i’ll let her know.

Here’s their reply…

As stated in the Refund/Withdrawal Policy for Ironman North America races
entries are not transferrable (meaning from person to person) nor may they
be held over to another year. As an athlete is aware of this policy and
accepts the conditions at sign up there really isn’t anything that can be
done in such unfortunate situations. Please be sure withdrawal request is
submitted prior to deadline date to ensure a partial refund.

Thanks,

Yep, rules are rules. I do not know why folks complain when they clearly pay upfront knowing there is a no refund policy, no matter what the reason.

When I crashed on my bike 2 years ago at the middle of the season, I had already paid for all the races, so I really ate it. What I learned from this is unless I think a race will fill up, I wait until the week of the race to pay now since if I am hurt, I would like to lose as little as possible. Now, I still have had to pay for a number of races already this season. If I cant go, for what ever reason, yep, I have made a donation to the event.
