Replace SRM cranks after a year?

I just read this from the SRM site -

“Notice: We recommend changing the cranks for a new pair every year, since they might become damaged after prolonged use, and could eventually break. If you use the cranks for longer than one year, you do so at your own risk.”

This seems,… well,… a little less than “robust”. I’m wondering if this is because of the way the powermeter is mounted or the design of the cranks or a marketing ploy for repeat business or what?

They are machined out on the back side to lighten them. I thought they were pretty thin but then I broke a different pair of cranks that were thinner after about eight months. I only weigh 150-160 pounds and based on my powermeter I am definitely not one of the stronger guys out there.

Most of the bigger companies with larger production runs use cold forging to create aluminum cranks. I’m guessing there’s no way SRM can afford to make the tooling (or outsource the costs) for the small run of cranks they sell to do cold forging.

I’ve bent some of the stupid light cranks of the early 90’s that were not cold forged.

YMMV.
