Repair stripped cage mount hole on carbon frame?

I did a search and didn’t find anthing on point. What is the best way to repair a stripped water bottle cage mounting hole on a carbon frame? I found something about using a Thinsert for other purposes. Will that work on a carbon mounting point?

Thanks!

try “Form a Thread” 1st, you don’t have to drill anything
.

probably your best option is Form-a-Thread first.

If that doesn’t work, check to see if the insert has enough metal to install a Heli-coil. That should do it.

How about redrilling and tapping to the next size. I have never tried this on a bicycle frame but I have performed this same operation on many stripped treaded holes on mechanical equipment.

What frame is it? is the water bottle boss metal in a carbon frame? If metal in carbon it can be drilled and replaced with a rivnut. Most frames use them already. They use a rivnut gun but you can install one with a bolt and a couple of nuts to compress.

When you say stripped are the threads stripped or is the nut spinning in the frame? if spinning in the frame you should be able to tighten it by compressing the nut

Same thing happened on my R3.

It is a replaceable rivet.

Your LBS can dremel out the old one and should should have the rivet gun to install new ones.

Its a quick and cheap fix…at least it was for me.

Here is my setup for rivnuts. Most shops should have this equipment. If you cannot find a shop you can get the rivnut here for .85 cents.

Park Tool’s website has a step-by-step guide:

I had this happen to my CF road frame and repair via Park Tool method (with QR as a mandrel) worked well.

See all comments below. It’s just a rivnut. Have your shop do it if you aren’t familiar with fixing it and make sure they also know how to do it as many shops don’t. Always good to add some 3M bonding agent when inserting the new one in the frameset.

Thanks for all of the replies! It is a 2010 Quintana Roo Seduza, if that sheds any more light on what I am dealing with. Looks like this can be tackled relatively easily.
