Reopening Alcatraz - end of escape races!?!

Trump orders reopening of notorious Alcatraz prison Trump orders reopening of notorious Alcatraz prison

In other news … A friend of mine posted this pic from yesterday’s Broad Street Run 10M in Philly

If it were to become a federal penitentiary again there would certainly be a perimeter area surrounding the island that wouldn’t allow boats and other watercraft.

This is all a thought experiment though since this is close to impossible to actually accomplish. It would cost an absurd amount of money to make Alcatraz a serviceable prison to modern standards.

Well all the shit Trump doing now was just a thought experiment by the 2025 folks, and much of that is now being implemented with money stolen from other depts in the Fed. I mean what, like a billion dollars to upgrade, his family just got about 3 billion personally in the new crypto scam from the UAE. Elon is redistributing all that money from DOGE to the border and ICE, so why not another pet project from heir leader? If he mentions it, then it can happen as we have seen. Only been a 100 days, but I would not rule out Greenland or the Panama Canal, things that we thought were 100% preposterous just months ago…

Of course it would make no sense, be highly expensive, and a bridge to nowhere. But now that he has mentioned it, I would not call it a thought experiment anymore and wouldn’t bet one dollar on it not happening…

Non-zero chance he’ll doze off watching some other Nic Cage movie and forget about it.

Alcatraz was shuttered because it cost 3x per prisoner compared to other prisons…and that was long before the cost of living in SF went through the roof due to the tech boom.

Complete waste of $$$, especially since when was the last time you heard about someone busting out of one of our existing supermax prisons (spoiler alert: never). Solution to a non-existent problem.

Very low probability that this comes to fruition.

Yes, I wasn’t even factoring in the ongoing upkeep and cost to actually house prisoners. Which, as you stated, was the reason it was closed in the first place.

When I lived in Philly, I would run past Eastern State Penitentiary; goddamn, that place gave me the creeps!!!

Sometimes, I swear I could hear voices through the walls

I would even run on the other side of the street and feel it pulling me over

I’d be lying if I said that I never thought about doing something in the realm of the Sri Chinmoy marathon around Eastern State (it’s about a 6/10s mile around; Sri Chinmoy 3100 ā€œcourse,ā€ if you will call it, is 0.5488, so that’s pretty close)

The race takes place annually over a 52-day period, with runners traversing a .5488 mile loop around a sports field, playground, and high school in Jamaica, Queens, New York City.

Marathon course is almost the same as The Jericho Mile track

LMAO if only he had fallen asleep during the PBS doc that aired in South Florida which led to this dumbass idea.

Having toured the prison I would entirely agree. I could imagine a prisoner coming up with so sort of escape plan that involves the race as well.

Sounds like a movie script ending. :grinning:

I remember Trump relishing the idea of ā€˜bad hombres’ cage fighting . . . why not have the inmates battle themselves, sharks and the elements. Would you not be entertained?

I’ve been to Alcatraz, this isn’t happening. Decrepit is not strong enough a word to describe it.

Pretty sure no actual thought was involved here.

From a real estate perspective, seem hare brained.

I think most high security prisons are now built in the middle of nowhere, where land is cheap(er), away from the population (you know in case an escape), with room to expand, and where staff, workers and administration can live affordably in close proximity.

Doesn’t sound like the Bay area really meets that criteria these days.

Agree it would be an absurd amount of taxpayer money to open this. Whether he does it or not, it’s another piece of ā€œred meatā€ for his voter base. Even if it’s just talk now.

Spending absurd amounts of money is the norm in this administration. How about the military parade for Trump’s bday? (surprised no one here is talking about this). But since he’s gutting agencies, firing people, and eliminating programs like women’s health, cancer, mental health, veteran care, he can afford to throw himself a grossly expensive military parade. And propose other ridiculous actions like re-opening Alcatraz.

Exactly.
