Is there a trick to removing the screws that hold the visor on the Louis Garneau Prologue helmet ?
They appear to be attached to a loose anchor under the skin of the helmet - turning the screw just spins the anchor, can’t find a way to actually detach them…
LG’s website doesn’t have manuals that I can find, though they could be hidden under the Flash somewhere…
Hate to break this to you, but you have to remove the plastic shell from the foam core by peeling the tape. The screws are held by bolts that you will need a screwdriver to hold in place (they are just taped to the backside and will turn once the tape breaks).
The tape is fairly easy to replace, especially with the visor off. If you replace the visor, replacing the tape around the visor is a huge pain in the ass.
I’ve had this problem with my prologue as well. You might not have to peel up the tape. I stick a flat bladed screwdriver behind the screw head and pry upwards lightly while turning the screw- that seems to help.
After you get the screws out I found it helps to put clear epoxy or super glue around the threaded part that sticks out of the helmet. This helps it to stay put the next time.
Sweet is right – you can get the screws off without removing the shell. It just takes some work (and swear words). Like he said, use a flathead screwdriver to lift up the underside of the screw. This will help to engage the female part of the connect to the plastic shell, hopefully grabbing just enough to get the screw a little bit loose.
Another trick you can try is pushing down really hard on the screw while trying to loosen it. This will hopefully push the backing into the styrofoam of the helmet enough to allow you to get it loose.
It took my about 30 minutes of cussing and throwing crap in my garage, but I was able to get that last screw off and remove my visor in one piece.
Are you sure you want to do this? Removing the visor will add at least 30 seconds to your 40k TT.
Hah! well, I can’t get the visor over any of my prescription glasses. I figure the extra 30s is probably worth it to avoid blindly careening off the slow guys in earlier waves…
Thanks to all, I was afraid it would come down to shell removal. Tried exerting pressure on the little tabs, but my arthritic old fingers just aren’t strong enough…
I tried the little tricks mentioned above on mine when I first tried to remove it. Pressing down hard worked the first time, but then the stuff started to rust and I had to peel the tape.
granted, my prologue is a few years old, but i’d no problems removing the visor at all; 30 or so seconds with a screwdriver & the visor was history (well, not completely; it and the screws are on a shelf in my closet).//d
