Removing tape goo from bike/helmet

What is the best substance to remove the gooey mess left behind from electrical tap on a bike. Also trying remove goo from the helmet sticker.

Thanks!

WD-40 works great believe it or not.

Goo gone.

WD-40 works great believe it or not.

I think WD-40 could be the most misunderstood product on earth … no-one knows what it really does!! I think it was originally a water displacement oil, hence WD in the name. I know it is a crap lube for most of the things most people use it as a lube for.

It will remove gunk though. I use Finish Citrus Degreaser, pretty amazing stuff for anything like that but it may be overkill, it’s pretty strong. I often wet a cloth and then add some degreaser to it. Wash off after. I am not sure if WD-40 might get off the gunk but leave behind some some oil which then might be hard to remove?

x2 - another brand name to look for is Goof Off - every house should have a can of this stuff on standby.

wish someone told me that earlier. I really dislike the goo on my helmet. So I used my wife’s nailpolish remover to remove the glue and it did, but left the helmet kind of dull, not as shiny as everywhere else. I also have sticker glue on the Shiv but I didn’t dare to try anything on the frame. Would WD40 damage the frame as in make it less shiny in those spots? A helmet is ok, but I would not want to mess up my frame or make it dull you know?

also consider using a fresh piece of duct or masking tape and apply it to the residue left behind after the sticker was removed.
If you stick the tape on the residue and remove the tape several times it will lift the residue off of whatever the sticker was applied to.

I find this to be the safest way where you don’t need to apply chemicals to your helmet or carbon frame.

WD-40.
Duct tape.
Crescent wrench.

The 3 of them can fix/ solve 90% of most of the problems on Earth.

Peel the sticker off as best you can. Try to get as much of the paper backing off as possible, so that only the sticky residue is left. I then use peanut butter and scrub the area with the PB and my finger nail, wiping away the junky PB with a paper towel. Repeat as necessary and finish with a warm wet rag to clean off the PB. The oils in the peanut butter loosen the sticky residue…this method works for me.

I guess goo gone and WD-40 would be faster, but I’m not sure on the possible side effects with the foam portions of the helmet.

It’s like trying to remove a label from a glass jar. The labels are affixed with different varieties of adhesive which respond differently to removal agents.

You should try a series of removal agents. Soak the gooy stuff with the removal agent for several minutes before trying to scrape off. If one removal agent doesn’t work, wash the area and dry it before moving on to the next removal agent.

  1. Plain old dishwashing liquid
  2. “Fantastic” spray or comparable household cleaner
  3. Rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover
  4. Any type of oil (corn oil, olive oil)

If those fail, do some internet research for something more serious. Often #4 works when all others fail.

Vegetable oil does the trick. Left a sticker on for a whole off season that got wet and it took it right off

^^^ I keep a can of it in my bike fixit tackle box for just such occasions.

MacGuyver or the A-Team and 100% of your problems will be solved.

I have a 3 year old and the Magic eraser works wonders! I think I used it to take the sticker residue on our new car.

DO Not use goo gone on a Giro helmet. I have the advantage 2 and it removed the finish. It is now a dull black.

Worked fine on my black Lazer. Looked like it dulled it at first, but it really just spread sticker glue thin and evenly. Little more goo gone and wiping and it was shiny new.
