Removing spray paint from clear-coated carbon frame

Hi Slowtwitchers, A friend brought me a frame to help him strip of cranks etc. The frame is a Trek OCLV 55, circa 2007 (?), with a “Project One” decal, and a nice clear-coat over the original paint. On top of that paint, is some carelessly applied spray paint – as though someone randomly sprayed over about 40% of the frame.

Question: Is there a solvent or technique that could remove a layer of old spray paint without affecting the clear-coat that’s underneath?

It’s random, but this is always the best place to ask for good advice (and snarky advice) on such things. My plan is to spot test it with different thinners… if that doesn’t work, I’ll recommend he get it professionally repainted. (I’ll try to post a good photo later.)

Maybe, depending on what type of spray paint was used. Try Xylene or Naptha with a rag. Generally clearcoat safe as long as you wipe on and wipe off.

Awesome, thank you! I’ll give that a shot. Also saw some videos online about removing spray paint from cars – will try carnuba wax as well.

I agree with the xylene or naptha suggestions. However, it may require a very light sanding with 600# or 1000#, plus water, to lightly sand off the spray paint if chemicals dont work. Personally, I would try wet sanding with 1000# first. If that doesnt get it, then maybe try chemicals. You can control how deep you go with paper, but you cant control how deep chemicals go.
