I recently inherited a set of tubulars that have an ungodly amount of glue build up. If the build up was even I would not be concerned. However, there are a couple of areas that are high with reciprocal low spots resulting in a less than stellar ride.
What can be used to remove the old glue? Nail Polish remover? Mineral Spirits?
3M Adhesive remover. Wear a fume filtering mask or work outside with a breeze. You didn’t say whether the rims are carbon or metal. If carbon, you don’t want to use anything stronger than the 3M, or you’ll risk affecting the clear coat.
I use a dremel tool with a wire brush attachment to get the glue off. It works great. It kind of smells and shoots little flaming balls of glue around, so be careful. If you gently apply pressure, you don’t risk damaging your wheels.
Then have at it. Tolulene, paint-thinners, whatever. With the Adhesive remover it really helps to out it on pretty heavy, give it a minute or two, scrape off the build-up (pennys work), then just soak and rotate a rag and scrub the glue off.
Just to clarify so that the original poster does not jump through a lot of hoops chasing down the right product (like I did), the previous posts are referring to 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover (http://www.sherwin-automotive.com/products/show_product.cfm?product=28989&cat=76) which comes in a quart can or also in a spray can (liquid works better). I had a heck of time finding some as Ace Hardware, Lowes, and Home Depot do not carry it in my area but I di find it at a local Sherwin Williams Automotive Finishes supply (store locator: http://www.sherwin-automotive.com/...ny/store_locator.cfm).
