Removing Glue on 808s

Anyone have recommendations for removing glue residue on the rims of Zipp tubular 808 wheels?

I’ve used a product called Gu-Gone that you can pick up at any hardware store. I soak a microfiber towel and leave it over a section of the rim of the wheel. The glue will come of fairly easily in a few hours later. I repeat along the circumference of the wheel. Once all the glue is off I wipe the rim down with acetone.

Similar to above and I’d even try that technique first next time. I used Goof-Off. Used a acid brush (found in the plumbing section) to apply while turning the wheel several times around. You’ll find that the glue “melts”. Then used a t-shirt over my gloved thumbnail to take the glue off. Keep moving the t-shirt to keep it clean. Needed to repeat the brushing a few times. Finished with acetone because the goof-off caused the glue to “snot” which is easily addressed with the acetone. I didn’t care for Goo Gone because it left more residue, but it worked well. Don’t need to or want to do it very often. Good luck!

This stuff and a lot of thumb action works well. It’s not an easy process no matter what you use.

I first tried some goof off 2, that I already had in the house. It didn’t work very well at all. Could have been a diluted version since it was/is in a 8 oz. spray bottle. Then I picked up a little bottle of Goo Gone, in a 1oz. bottle. It worked like a champ. I concur it is a little messier, but it works. It appears to be oil based as it leaves a good residue. I wiped it in with a rag around the wheel several times. I then used my fingernail to scrape/roll off the excess glue. I finished with acetone to clean the Goo Gone residue off. Took less than 30min to get everything off and cleaned.

Acetone is all you need. Fill a small aluminum pan just deep enough to soak the rim a section at a time. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes. The glue should wipe off with a sponge with minimal effort. It may be time-consuming, but it’s clean and the rims will look like new when finished.

I tried Goo Gone, goof off, acetone, and stain and varnish remover. None of that worked for me. I bought this stuff and it worked alot better. It was still a huge PITA but it did better than the other stuff I tried.

x2 on the TARR (tape and residue remover); cover it with plastic wrap to keep it from drying out and leave it on
for a couple hours. If your glue is really thick leave it on longer-will not harm your substrates
