Remember when Slowman said that a road company like Serotta could not possibly know how to make a tri bike?

So it’s a QR MTB… they also made Road bikes. What are you getting at? So they take geometries from tried and true other designs and apply them. TRI is new it was something you had to create.

Sort of a market association thing. Serotta would definately be on my short list for a high end road bike, but I’d look elsewhere for a tri bike. QR would be in the running for a tri bike, but a mountain bike? - get real.

Sort of like when the WWF wrestling people expanded into football.

great example of why serotta shouldn’t be building tri bikes?

Actually the Panamint wasn’t a “pure” MTB, but I’ll let Slowman reply to this one.

Kinda like a Felt BMX bike…then again I dont think Felt leads the way in any market.

it was sort of an off/on road tri bike. i was doing a lot of touring in rural areas and thought i’d build the bike i wanted. so i did. i don’t know that the bike has that much real world utility, but it was an interesting experiment.

but the point is still a valid one: you stray from your niche at your own peril.

I think I can add some to this. From what I remember instead of the usual 72-ish degree seattube that’s usually on mountain bikes it had a slightly steeper seattube (like 74-ish degrees) and was allegedly designed for Xterra type races. I think it had a shorter top tube as well and reportedly was not a happy climber. No surprise given the geometry. Steep isn’t always good

Tom D or SD might disagree :-)_

Was I correct in my recollection of the geometry?

Hello,

I wonder if that would have been the perfect bike for some of the iron distance off road tris that are popping up. I intended to do one in OH a few years ago but it was cancelled. I went down and rode the course and most was roads or dirt roads with maybe 10% single track. Before the cancellation I was trying to figure out a way to adapt aerobars to a MB. On this course you may have been able to ride a cyclocoss bike with aerobars and just run the technical parts and been way ahead of the game.

It’s at 99 cents! What a deal. I think that I will throw a bid in for fun!

Our you take your knowledge of cycling and apply it to another kind of riding and make damn good bikes. I still haven’t seen any proof that Serrota makes bad tri bikes.
