Red Bull on Ironman Course

I drink red bull before big workouts but I have never used during the race.

Since it is now on the course can I get some feedback on how it affected you during the run?

Do they serve it flat?

Cold with ice or air temp?

Any stomach issues?

I am going to try it on my long run this weekend and have to say I am a little scared.

Don’t be scared. It is just caffeine. If you already consume caffeine you will notice less impact than if you live a caffeine free life. Nothing new on race day sp good for you for trying it on the long run. I would wait until run is 2/3 done so if you have an issue with it, the whole run is not compromised. I tried it last week before a group ride and it felt the same as having a cup of joe.

A run affects your stomach much more than a bike ride though.

To the OP have any of these big workouts been run workouts?

…Since it is now on the course…

Which course? I didn’t see anything in the IM Chattanooga athlete guide… not that athlete guides are known for their accuracy…

I think it is similar to coke, just a more extreme version. A very rapid sugar hit, and an equally rapid comedown. So once you start with it you must keep going. They tend to only have it at one aid station.

In my experience (2 races) I only took it within the last 5km. This is partly for fear of bonking, and partly for fear of the unknown - I don’t use it in training.

I was referring to the caffeine effect.

So is your concern the caffeine or the liquid volume for the run? If you take roctane gels or cola or caffeine tabs or energy shots you are getting caffeine.

Again, nothing new on race day, but consuming 4 oz of redbull is not going to be a whole lot different for most of us than chugging 4 oz of water with a roctane. Red bull has roughly 80 mg caffeine for 8.3 oz, and roctane 35 mg per gel.

Just wondering about the nature of the workouts because I’ve had stomach issues from drinking Redbull in a casual environment. I realize that everyone is unique but I’m curious to know what kind of effects it would have on running.

I think it might be the Jaegermeister that is doing that.

Seriously though, no way would I even consider it on race day or training if it bothered my stomach. I have to ask though, how much did you consume? I know they have some pretty large cans of that stuff. Do you have stomach issues with caffeinated beverages like coffee or cola?

Less sugar in a red bull than a can of coke. More caffeine, but still less than a standard cup of coffee. Gatorade has less in a serving, but it is still the same sugar and still reacts the same way. All pure sugar drinks will burn fast and then die out. More sugar would actually mean it burns longer.

I had two cans in a pretty short period of time. I think it was the standard ones. Wasn’t drinking any alcohol and I don’t drink coffee but don’t have any issues with coke.

I got over it since then have no interest in drinking any more. Was quite a while ago so I forget what some of the other factors could have been.

It will be on the course in Chattanooga.

Really would like to know if it will be cold or warm?

On a side note I have been getting ready for chattanooga by replacing my gels with what I assume they will be serving on the run course. I have gained a few pounds but these are so much better than gels. Just hope they serve milk at the aid stations.

Wait… they’re seriously putting this stuff on the race course now? I didn’t realize that just because a company sponsored a sporting event, their products automatically and instantly became suitable sports nutrition.

They advertised that Red Bull was gonna be out on the run route at Louisville a few weeks ago, and had given everyone a can in their athlete bag but i didnt actually see any on the run route while i was chugging coke the back half of the run…although i could have simply missed where they were handing it out. Im sure they prolly only had one or two aid stations that had it.

IMMT had it. i don’t know anyone who took it even after some of the aid stations ran out of coke

They had it on the course in CDA but not in IM Louisville. I needed it big time in CDA around mile 13 and 14 so I took it along with everything they were serving in liquid form at both aid stations. I attribute thwarting a complete bonk partially to that red bull. Within a few min of taking it I noticed a boost. I had it a few more times on the last half marathon, along with my usual plan and I had no problems with it. However I will say I would not ever start it until I felt I need it. I wouldn’t take it “preventatively” from the start. Maybe at mile 13 or 14 even if you don’t feel like you need it.

In CDA they served it at air temp, but it wasn’t 90 degrees there either. If needed, just dump it in a glass of ice and serve on the rocks.

Had no caffeine till the second loop of the run in Mont Tremblant. Tried a little red bull around mile 14…no discomfort other than a little extra burping. Alternated coke and red bull to finish with no ill effects, they pretty much served the same purpose!

I use caffeine all the time, but Red Bull gives me the squirts.

red bull is just absolutely terrible for you. i find it interesting that triathletes who care so much about their bodies will put this kind of stuff into themselves.

No pink font? Not much different than coke or any or sports drink they have on course.

Red Bull is illegal in many countries. Needless to say, it won’t be on the course in those countries at least. Is it in any way considered an endurance sports drink? Do any Ironman athletes use Red Bull in training? I can’t believe WTC puts it on the course anywhere. WTC must be getting paid handsomely to put it out there.
