Recommended 50 yd interval time. Swim 1:40 100's

I swim right around 1:40 100s for 500 yards. Or 500 yards in 8:20. What would be a recommended interval for doing 10x50 yard intervals.

I am new to this. I also really get tired after 6 or 7 50s. But I have really no idea what I should be targeting. I have been going on 1:10.

My goal, right now, is to get faster at 400m length events. I am doing a few sprints this summer. Also to continue to improve my stroke. I find intervals seem to really help this as my stroke seems to really start falling apart on longer distances.

You swim the 100 at 1:40 pace or…
You swim the 100 at 1:40 interval and actually swim a ~1:30 pace?

If the first, then I would do :55 or 1:00 min intervals
If the second, I would swim :50 pace

Either way, aim for a semi comfortable rest/50y of ~5 sec

Jagerstar is back (spoiler!)

I swim 1:40 per 100 for 500 yards. Straight swimming.

I always find it confusing when someone states they swim 1:40 100s. I always wonder for what length? Is it a 100 sprint? Is it for 2.4 miles?

So for me I can hold 1:40 per 100 for 500 yards. This is also killing myself.

I will try 1:00 min internals tonight. See if I can do 10x50. Then some rest. Then I want to try the 50 hard 50 easy intervals.

Thanks for the help

Usually you state how fast you would complete each (trying to hold consistent strong effort) 100 for a set of 10 x 100s.
That’s the usual way of saying how fast you go, on avg.

So if I swim 1:30, how long should I wait until I start my next? Is 30 seconds to long?

depends on what you are trying to accomplish…but most likely, yes.

bart, swimmers have this weird communication lingo (I’m joking fishes)…they sometimes include RECOVERY in the entire interval. So, when you say 1.40 intervals, they might think you’re swimming 1.30 + .10 rest = 1.40. In my last swim thread, I was all mixed up until FLAJill cleared it up in one of her posts.

Good luck with the workout.

I am about that pace–1:40/100 for 500 isn’t killing myself, but it isn’t falling asleep, either. I do my 50 m repeats leaving on the 1:00.

The basic point of doing 50s instead of swimming straight is to give yourself a little bit of recovery time. This time will allow you regroup and focus on holding proper technique while still pushing yourself. It’s my opinion that you should still be breathing fairly hard when you push off. However, the interval (or send-off) needs to be long enough so that you can finish the set well.

Swimming has much shorter rest periods during sets than other sports (or so I’m told). It’s not uncommon to do 100s getting only 5-10 seconds of rest. This means that if I were going 10x100s with an aerobic focus, I’d try to hold 1:05s or so and leave on 1:10 or 1:15.

If you’re killing yourself to make 500 yards at a 1:40 pace, does that mean you’re starting at 1:30 and slowing down to 1:50 by the end? Or are you pretty good about holding the same pace the whole way through?

Starting with a :50/50 base, I’d say you should probably start at 1:00. If you find it hard to complete with good technique, start with 1:05s. Work on refocusing yourself on each one, ensuring that you’re working on good technique and trying to hold your average pace. (It’s silly, but I find repeating a little mantra like “no pain, no pain. good walls. push through. no pain.” to myself before pushing off can help with this…)

Exactly. I am around 1:26 when I start and 1:50 something at the end. This is when I swim 500 yards straight. I am swimming about 10k yards a week now but endurance is really still taking awhile to come. I am always completely exhausted when leaving the pool.

I really, really like intervals because I find it much easier to hold form. When I swim longer I get tired and loose form. I have not been able to get to a point where my form is where I want it to be and able to swim a long distance. Before improving my form I could swim 2 miles without any problem but slow. I would swim 2:08 100s.

I figure at some point it will click in. The other day I forced myself to start a little slower and I really felt like it was close to me being able to just keep going but unfortuntely I had to leave because of an appointment.
