Recommendations for adjustable stem?

I’ve never used or seen one in person.
Not sure if length and/or angle are both adjustable? Gotta wonder about strength and reliability too, but I suppose they wouldn’t make if 'em if they didn;t have some confidence.

Ritchey makes one.Only angle adjustable.45 deg. up or down.

The Ritchey is really nice, not quite as adjustable as the Look (the Look can actually get shorter or longer) but a TON cheaper and quite a bit lighter. I think only 20-30 grams heavier than their WCS one, maybe? In any case I have it on my 'cross bike, and no worries about strength/durability/price (like there ever is with Ritchey stuff)

Both Ritchey and Look make them as the others have said. I sell/sold the Look stem. More adjustable. A bit heavy and you have to really watch the bolts but a great stem. Ken Glah used to race all the time on the stem with no problems.

Spinmeister,

I have a brand new Look ergostem I’m looking to sell, email me at dantrott@hotmail.com if you are interested.

I used a Giant EXT Pro, adjustable stem on a bike a few years ago. It was a quill type and was beautiful to behold. It adjusted for angle only. The newer clamp on style doesn’t look as nice but does the same job. Worked well for me as it allowed a higher postion for longer races (IM) and also a low “killer fast” sprint postion with only a few minutes change time. Excellent. I think they are still available separately and they come on many Giant bikes too.

Hmmm. Sketchy.

Say what?
You mean adjustables in general are sketchy?

I have been using a look-ergostems since 1997… I have one on a road bike(for crits, training, etc) and one on a t.t. (at least 60,000 combined miles on them)… they are very very stiff and super strong…

Never had a problem with slipping… the main thing is to loosen BOTH bolts when changing the positioning… then, tighten both down when the adjustment has been made…

granted, ergo’s are alittle heavy… but bike-weight is not an issue with me… FWIW

Look ergostem. It’s awesome. Adjustable in every way imagineable. And it’s rock solid. The only problem is it’s a bit of a pig. Weighs about a pound!

And costs a ton, unless you can find a used one.

You might want to talk to dirtydan fast. It could save you a chunk of change. Look made quill type and threadless adjustable stems. Make sure to locate the type you need.

Thanks for the info on your experience with the stem.

It’s pretty much what I’m looking for, so of course, yeah, pricey is an understatement. I’ve emailed DD. A new one (I’ve seen $180 to $220 so far) probably ain’t gonna happen soon.

Spinmeister,

Bear in mind, however, that the cost of two or three standard stems purchased while one experiments to find the right stem can easily match or exceed the cost of the Look adjustable stem. Afterwards, the value of the Look stem remains and is as easily passed on to the next “experimenter”, whereas the value of the individual fixed stems is most often lost and just the cost of finding the right stem.

Over the past year, at least one Look adjustable stem has changed hands more than once on this very forum. The Look stem is not an albatross that you have to be stuck with, though, the individual stems may be.

Look Ergostem is the only one I would recommend.

I would get the Ritchey one…the Look ergo stem is a beast!!!
