Just threw away several pairs of what i call “assy” smelling running shorts away-- mostly all of the cheaper variety… the kind where a slight amount of sweat reactivates the bacteria or whatever. the special wash doesn’t help them much or not for long. I don’t have any BO issues, lol, just looking for good pair of running shorts that don’t smell bad after a few workouts. My tri shorts and bike shorts work great but prefer some running shorts, maybe with a zippered pocket or two and not form fitting like a tri short. What brand and model do you guys recommend, for dudes?
I run in pearl Izumi infinity split shorts, have since late 2011. Not form fitting and one zippered back pocket. Never had an issue with stink, I do wash after every run.
I run in DeSoto Tuesday run shorts. I also wash my run/bike gear post training, no issues with stink
There’s three of shorts on theis page with different leg lengths.

Sweet, will check that out. Didn’t think to look at Desoto-- love their products! Thanks
Had a similar problem; solved it a couple of ways without having to invest in special shorts/garments.

Rinse your shorts (or whatever garment that is having the issue) very well with water immediately following the event/training. This should be done before the perspiration dries. Hang them up to dry or immediately throw in the laundry and it should prevent the issue.

If you didn’t/couldn’t do item #1, or if you have some clothing with the smell already in them, try a product called MiraZyme (http://www.amazon.com/Essentials-MiraZyme-Odor-Eliminator-8-Ounce/dp/B0000DYNSN). It isn’t a wash in. It comes in concentrate that you dilute with water (I use a spray bottle to minimize wasted product) and saturate the garment with the mixture. Hang it and allow it to air dry for several days. The smell will improve as time goes. If after a few days the smell is still there, re-apply and allow once again to air dry. Repeat as many times as necessary though I never had to do more than three times (for one that was REALLY bad). I had some clothes that I believed to be ruined until I discovered MiraZyme and the previous step to prevent it from happening again.
I don’t get any kick backs from recommending this product nor am I in any way associated with it or any company that makes/sells it. I’ve just had good success with it and thought I would share in case someone else would find it beneficial.
Best of luck!
Wait?
Is this seriously a thing?
I’ve run thousands of miles and often times will wear a pair of shorts for 2-3 runs and have NEVER had any issues like this.
I only wear nike splits. Nike apparel absolutely trashes any other brand in distance running. It’s not even close. Their shorts, singlets, tops, jackets, gloves, socks, and flats just own the competitors. If you want quality apparel and don’t want this funk you’re speaking of, buy some Nike apparel.
Yes, you will spend solid money (good Nike splits go for like $50) and their socks can range from $8 to $14 a pair just depending on whether you prefer the anti blister or the more cushioned variety but I guarantee you will never regret your purchases, never smell, never complain about the quality, and NEVER complain about the style.
Nike >>>>>>> All other running companies in regards to apparel.
Now don’t get me wrong, asics, brooks, PI, etc make solid apparel and I own apparel by those brands (looking at you Asics TIL jacket which has saved my ass on so many brutally cold runs), but product for product, Nike apparel just proves itself time and time again. They are the status quo that every other company in the industry aims to achieve.
Best of luck with your problem, bro.
In the future try adding white vinegar to the fabric softner holder on your washing machine. It does a treat at killing off that stink and is really cheap. I have cheap shorts and free technical shirts to train in and never have issues with smell. My one pair of cheap running shorts is 5 years old.
I think it really depends on the fabric, or maybe the dyes used. I had a pair of cheap Reebok shorts that just reeked. I spent a entire run trying to get away from the stink, and it turned out I was running away from myself.
I tossed those and got only a slightly more expensive pair of Under Armours and have never had a problem.
Brooks Synergy shorts. I have 5 pair and absolutely hate running in anything else. Has the “anti-microbial silver fibers” whatever that is but they don’t really stink. They also hold up great. On sale here: http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpage.html?PCODE=BMHV3F
.
Enough sweat is gonna make anything smell like ass. You could minimize the smell by making a pre-emptive strike with some swipes with a moist flushable wipe.

I add white vinegar to the fabric softener holder too, with all my Landry.
Icebreaker Sonic Short
This looks to be the new version of the Icebreaker Men’s Distance Short which I love running in.

Those look awesome except for the whole “$85 for a pair of shorts” part.

Yeah, I know this is triathlon and all, but if I pay $85 for a pair of running shorts, they’d better wash themselves.
cutting back on the asparagus might be a good place to start…
This may earn me some ridicule, but in twenty+ years of running, the best distance shorts I’ve found are the Lululemon 5" surge shorts. They fit perfect, don’t stink, and are light and breathable. They also have one zippered pocket that’s the perfect size and is placed in such a way that it doesn’t annoy the hell out of you to have something in it.
And, hey, I thought they were ridiculously expensive until I saw the Icebreaker shorts posted above.
Consider yourself lucky then. Synthetics hold the funk. Some of us have better funk than others.
To the OP -
If you can find any sort of shorts with silver threads or treatment, it helps keep the funk away. Lululemon (they only make good silverscent running shirts, everything else is fluff) makes a good shirt and the only running shirt that myself and my husband have had remain funk-free for more than 10 months. I’ve been begging them to make a short with the silver, but no luck. And their men’s running shorts are a joke says the husband.
Good luck. Fellow funker.

The older version were not this expensive, and I got them on pro deal. Nonetheless, I’m still using the one, older pair.
Craig,
I’d make an absolute mockery of you - but I have not one BUT TWO pairs of lululemon yoga pants - so I can’t really say anything to anyone about anything. EVER.
