Recommend a rain jacket for running

I’m in the market for a new jacket for running in the rain. I’d like it to be super lightweight and breathable. I’m not too concerned about whether it has a hood or not. Anybody got any good recommendations?

Sadly this product does not exist. I’ve never encountered a running RAIN jacket that can keep you dry, while also not turning into a sweat bag.
If you hear people say that they have one, it’s probably because where they live, “rain” means a very light sprinkle.

Nike just came out with one called the “Shieldrunner” , and while I do have high hopes, I also fully expect it to let me down without mercy.

You’re going to get wet from the outside or inside so it’s a wash. A shell over a fleece over a wicking layer works for me. The fleece has enough relief to keep the shell from sticking to it and the shell should have openings at the neck, waist and wrists to allow air circulation as you move.

What’s wrong with getting wet? Running in the rain is pretty awesome.

Yeah, if you want waterPROOF you’re kind of outta luck unless you want to marinate in your own sweat. I’ve got a couple of light convertible jackets (sleeves zip/magnet off like a bolero) that I find are ideal. They’re water resistant and block the wind, but they won’t cause you to overheat.

I do not own the jacket, but it is on my short list. If it works as advertised I think it will soon be the “it” rain running jacket.

If you don’t want to get wet while running in the rain, then don’t run. Running in the rain with a rain coat that will keep you “dry” is worse than running without a rain coat. I can’t imagine all that sweat and heat building up inside that rain jacket. Yuckkk…

I have a Gore Running jacket that is waterproof, windproof, and breathable. Its also very close cut and comfortable. This may be what your looking for: http://www.goreapparel.com/ESSENTIAL-GORE-TEX®-Active-Jacket/JGESST,default,pd.html?dwvar_JGESST_color=9908&start=8&cgid=grw-men-geartype-jackets.

For clarification, I’m not looking to stay completely dry. If I wanted that I’d stay inside or wear an all weather suit with rain boots. Rather, I’m looking for something that does a good job of keeping me from essentially being completely drenched - so perhaps water resistant is the correct term. I previously had something that I picked up at a marathon expo many years ago but it has gone missing.

That looks promising.

I like to run in a cycling vest. I use a lightweight wind vest that keeps me from getting soaked in a drizzle. With a long sleeve underarmour type shirt, I find that my arms get wet, but my core being dry-ish keeps me warm.

If it’s colder or for real rain, I run in a Rapha Softshell Gilet. Shit, I already paid for it and this helps reduce my cost/use.

As long as I have a hat and keep my core warm, I tend not to be too cold in the rain. Neoprene gloves may also help if it’s really cold.

+1 for Gore Running Wear. Best piece of running clothing I’ve ever bought, although the softshell tights are a close second.

I also have a pair of their windstopper pants that are excellent. Now that you mention it, I might need a new pair of tights!

I’ve been using an older version of the Patagonia Wind Shield Soft Shell Jacket for a few years. Very happy with the jacket in most conditions. One of my favorite pieces of gear.

Gore Running is pretty solid, lightweight and fairly breathable.

You can also get a Salomon, which have the EXACT same models at about 75% of the price of the Gore. Plus Salomon usually goes on special, Gore never (or almost never) goes on special.

Patagonia Houdini - my favorite piece of running gear I own. It’s not going to keep you dry for hours, nothing will unless it’s not breathable in which case you will just get wet from sweating so much. Up to 45 minutes or so in a good rain, it’s great. It’s extremely lightweight and packable (packs down to about the size of an 8oz redbull) and does great in the wind as well, I wear it all winter. If you buy it, just make sure you dry it in the dryer when you wash it and reapply a DWR once a year or so (depending on how often you use it). Available with and without a hood.

This.

I like a hat to keep rain off my face. Other than that running in the rain is pretty awesome. If anything I prefer soaked lycra on me than some heavier rain jacket.

So many of my best races and track workouts were done in the rain. I love it. Once you’re wet… well, you’re wet.

I think many people who started off with cycling are used to needing a jacket in the rain due to the chilling effect of wind when you’re wet. But running, you’re just not going fast enough for that effect.
