Recommend a headband/covering to help deal with sweat on bike

I sweat heavily and when I’m in the areo position and look down for an extended period of time all the sweat starts to pour down my face. I wear a skull cap and that has helped a little, but after about 30 min it is worthless. I have a Halo headband that I have had no luck with. I put a streak of vaseline in my eyebrows to try to direct sweat around my eyes, but that only helps for so long. I came home yesterday and found I had rubbed the side of my face next to my eyes raw from so much attention. Ordinarily, I would stop and switch skull caps, but I was trying for a 60 min sustained effort and didn’t want to interrupt things. My glasses get covered and become useless with streaks and it’s generally a real pain. Any suggestions?

thanks
Barry

I do get some side eyes about it from time to time but one hack that I’ve started to use is using a women’s pad underneath my halo band. I live in Texas and can almost always make it through a long ride before the pad fills up too much. It’s a bit weird but function over fashion.

Have you considered …???

Check these out. I’ve worn them and they work really well. The hubby uses them all the time and he says that sometimes if it is a really long ride they start giving a headache. It really is a game changer and prevents sweat from dripping into your eyes.

It’s like a gutter for head sweat.

And yes, they do stay on.

Veo Strip — Sweat-Diverting Strip for Cyclists, Triathletes, Runners

In hot races I have thrown this on under my aero helmet in transition and it is pretty helpful so I don’t have to reach under my visor to wipe the brow:

I just bought a Halo headband with built in strip. Will see how that goes. Came as a recommendation on here in another topic. What happens to yours where it doesn’t work? Sucks to hear that doesn’t work as I just bought one based off of ST. Lol.

Maybe both?

with a wife and 3 daughters, there are definitely some around. I would die if I ever heard someone yell, “we’re all out of pads again because of dad!”. I have little cool cred in our house as it is, that would totally destroy any remaining bit and my two boys would never let me live that down. Going to pass on that one, but thumbs up for the ingenuity. Under different circumstances…

Admittedly I thought you were joking - and then I realized you weren’t - gross. Seriously - the Veo strip link I posted is pretty amazing. Who cares about sweat being there so long as it doesn’t go into your eyes- these things work. No I’m not sponsored by them but I really think it’s a much better solution than a mini diaper on your forehead :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve used something similar, the SweatGUTR. Unfortunately, I think it and the Veo strips likely fail the same way for TT position triathletes - the ‘gutter’ for where the sweat drips down doesn’t work properly in a head-tilted-down TT position. The sweat ends up dripping off the front/middle, with no better result than before.

The Sweatgutr (and I suspect Veostrips which work similarly) work great for running and mountain biking due to the upright position so the sweat can channel back. I can still overwhelm it with the sheer amount of sweat I produce but it’s at least 50% better than without which is dramatic for me. I use the SweatGUTR 100% the time for hard runs as I always regret it when I don’t.

Alas, I haven’t found any solution that solves the TT bike sweat problem other than just deal with it. Halo headbands are a super fail for me - I can saturate that thing within several minutes of riding hard, and then it’s utterly useless. Wearing a cycling cap under the helmet absorbs about 5-7minutes of my hard efforts, but then is also useless (I use this regularly though.)

FYI I’ve pretty much only used the Veo strips on my triathlon bike. I mean in TT position you need to be looking forward to avoid crashes. I mean unless you literally look down and just hope you don’t crash into stuff in between glances up ahead.

Compressport has a thin headband and a wider headband. I have a thin one I’ve used for years now. It has small perforations that keep your head cool. The material I thin, durable and stretchy. I need to buy a few more as they’re excellent. The only thing I notice is that with the thin one sometimes a drip or two of sweat falls from my hair to the floor. I’ll occasionally use a small sport towel in threshold sessions to wipe the top of my head as a session progresses beyond an hour. It works really well for me. It’s possible the wider band would mitigate that one aspect, but imo those are your best option.

I’ve used, and moved on from, the Sweat GUTR and Halo headbands. Sweat GUTR drips into face in TT position and Halo is too thick and the rubber strip doesn’t stay adhered really well.
What I have settled on, and actually totally love, is just really cheap, lightweight headbands that you can find on Amazon (link below). If you wear them unfolded (not doubled over) they cover your whole forehead and a bit above it. What’s great about that is that it is a ton of surface area both to absorb the sweat and to let it evaporate. But it leaves the top of the head open to airflow to keep the body cooler. Also, since they’re so thin, they’re really comfortable under a helmet. In the back, it’s stitched doubled over, which is fine - just keep the back part above the helmet retention dial area.
These are the last ones I bought and they’re great. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08QDGL56G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I’m not sure if they’ll be any better than a skullcap, but maybe worth a try?

Are they a one time use or can you re-use them?

I have two of these that I rotate. I swear by them.

SKIN COOLER HELMET BEANIE* – De Soto Sport

.

I also have two but can only find one unfortunately. If you fold the bottom band inward I swear they work 3 times as well. It’s like a little gutter that sucks the sweat outward to dry. They also fit a little better this way. Tried the halo and a few other beanies unsuccessfully.

i’ve always just used some cheap “buffs” from amazon or that i’ve received at races. i’ll cut them in half so that they’re not so bulky and then fold them into a headband. they work great and they’re cheap

I have the halo. It works great on my road bike, not so much in the aerobars on the tri bike. The angle of the head in that position makes it so that the silicone strip is not curved enough to effectively divert sweat to the sides and it drips off the middle just like a regular headband. Now I just go with a regular headband and I pick glasses that interface with the headband in a way that sweat will run down the nose bridge. As long as I don’t get it into my eyes I’m good.
