Recommend a good water bottle for my BTA setup!

I’ve decided that I’ve been annoyed by my BTA bottles and am looking to get a new one. My ‘Aquashot’ bottle leaks all over my bike when I hit bumps, and my Camelbak podium does the same since it’s too annoying to lock out the rotating dial every time I drink from it.

Requirements:

  • 20+oz

  • Nozzle must be push on/off. (Which rules out the Camelbak Podium - I have it and I hate the dial-type control for BTA - too hard to turn it, and if you don’t lock it out, the BTA will leak all over your bike on any bump)

  • Must be able to be gripped in your mouth with no hands without major problem, so you can swap bottles on the go.

  • All black is my preferred color, but I’ll do other ones as well

And yes, I do have a different BTA system that has a straw and which you empty bottles into it, but for training I’m avoiding use it all the time due to annoyances with cleaning those things due to my use of sugary sports drinks. Easier to deal with bottle swaps for training.

I looked at some online reviews from the bottles by Polar, Specialized, which I thought would be a no-brainer for cycling use, but a lot of weird complaints out there about them, like the Polar bottles being hard to grab in your mouth, and the Specialized Purist bottles requiring too much force to spray. Figured I’d check here first in case someone really likes their bottle and would recommend.

Go with the purist bottle with the watergate cap. Actually found the lululemon branded version was the cheapest ($9, ships free), and the watergate cap can swap to other purist bottles.

The flow isn’t as good as the podiums, but it doesn’t leak when you hit bumps the way the podiums do.

Agreed, purist with watergate cap user here too. Finally a bottle that doesn’t leak when BTA!

So another old thing becomes new again, i.e., this type of bottle has been around since circa 1970, maybe even earlier.

Though back in the day we were drinking out of these.

I remember in the 90s Giro coming out with the first (maybe) extra-fancy, highly featured bottle:

I’ve been using these for the past couple of years. Simple, easy to clean, and no issues with leaking. The large one is 24 oz.

These may not be the best, but they’re pretty entertaining

Did I get one for Xmas? Fuck no
Will I be ordering one ? Fuck yes

Hey there - assuming when you say Aquashot it might be the XLAB one. It definitely shouldn’t be leaking and we can easily warranty it for you, sorry you had a leaky one. We did have a small batch that had some issues a while back so maybe yours was from that one?

Feel free to PM me or shoot me an email with a picture of the version you have, and we can get you a new one out today.

I don’t’ think there’s a problem with the bottle. It’s the inherent design - it doesn’t really ‘leak’, it’s just that in the horizontal BTA position, if you hit a bump, the bottle deforms a little and you get a small amount of fluid coming out the nozzle. If it were an upright position, it would be no problem. Also no problems on smooth roads.

I actually like the bottle for what it is, just isn’t optimal for the BTA position (great for regular bottle cage positions, though). Appreciate the feedback, though, thank you!

Oh ok understand where you are coming from then. We do have our insulated bottles - has the traditional open/close, 20 ounces. Happy to send one of those for the inconvenience…either the Dawn To Dusk Ice Flow or the XLAB Cool Shot - same bottle, different graphics

Will make sure to send your feedback to our engineers as well!
