Recommend A Charity

Racing IMWI on 9/11. While this will be the hardest run of my life and require every bit of courage, strength, and determination I have, it hardly compares to the courage, strength, and determination of the heroes from 15 years previous. Would love to pay homage and raise funds for an organization - either for 9/11 First Responders or Veterans. Thoughts on a group that might have a tri component to it?

Thanks.

Team Ride to Give. For $250 donation you can get a tri kit and they have a tri “team”. Mostly help kids w/special needs so not exactly what you were interested in but definitely has a tri component to it.

How about the Marine Corps Scholarship foundation? https://www.mcsf.org/

Honor their spirit and sacrifice…like them, try and find a way to make a real difference in people’s lives. That usually means smaller, local charities…feet on the ground, closer to the people who need help.

Start with a local food bank. Real, meaningful impact on people’s lives.

TeamRWB or Mission Continues are great veterans organizations. TeamRWB of course has a great triathlon tie in. Mission Continues is a great organization that provides 6 month fellowships to veterans to work in non-profit organizations to gain experience and give back to the community.

Emily,

Check out Dare2Tri (http://www.dare2tri.org/military/) cofounded by Melissa Stockwell, an Iraq War veteran, Purple Heart Recipient and above-the-knee amputee. They have a terrific tri program specifically to help seriously wounded service members participate in triathlon. Located 150 miles away from IMWI in Chicago. Good luck!

I’d recommend MSF - for 40 years they’ve been the first responders in emergency situations where civilians are being shot and killed. They go where the trouble is, and then save lives.

All their doctors and nurses are volunteers, and they do amazing work.

Team RWB.

Here is the mission statement of Team Red White and Blue. “Team RWB’s mission is to enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity”. This describes your OP

I am the Athletic Director for the Williamsburg VA RWB Community. If you have any questions feel free to reach out.

It’s not exactly what you have in mind, but our team raises money and awareness for Operation Underground Railroad, which employs former Special Ops guys to conduct sting operations that rescue children from human trafficking situations (i.e., sex slavery). Check out www.ourtri.org if interested, and feel free to contact me with any questions. Good luck with your training!

I race with them and my son was a beneficiary of their work.

There is a really great organization called Tuesday’s Children that was originally set up to help the children who lost a parent in 9/11. I believe that now they help others affected by violence but they continue to work with the families that were directly impacted by 9/11.
