Rear tire for TT

Given a half rough chipseal/ half smoothish course and the choice between a 2 yo 23mm spec mondo open tubular(clincher, #2 on AFM rev 9 at 0.00233) and a 23mm 4000s which would you choose and why? will be on a super 9 on a p5, so not sure how much, if any the aeroness of 4000s would come into play.

yeah, TT tomorrow and I’d want to finish as little far back in my age group as possible.

the solid black 4000s will look better than the very dirty off white on the mondo. did i just say that? seriously?

Probably whichever is currently mounted.

But then… the 4ks would look a lot better… and that’s important too

Mondo because faster
.

i’ve got all day and nowhere to be…

then yeah… the mondo because why not (other than the white)

Both are good choices. Not sure what the mileage is like on the Mondo, but I would likely go with that.

I would imagine that the aero-ness of the conti 4000s is less important on a rear wheel that is well shielded by the seat tube. I would think that crr would be more important here.

Having said that, I used 4000s on chipseal and it seems to manage quite well. I’m not sure how the Mondo would hold on rough road.

well, there is the trailing edge. probably just out thinking myself.

I’d also go with the Mondo unless you don’t want to for puncture proofness. The aero difference (if any) will likely be very small and probably only at higher yaw angles anyway.

You’re competing at Nationals and your asking ST for advice? seems it should be the other way around. but since you are resting up for your race (good luck btw) what’s a typical training week for a TT’er at the pointy end of the spear?

I don’t think the difference between those two tires will matter much. Just be sure to use a latex tube.

answers are what i thought they might be

training… been a very inconsistent last 2 years. you can see posts about svt, ablation attempts, med adjustments, end of caffeination, and the ever lovely stomach bug that hit the midwest in june(just in time for elite nats) and has not helped anything in last 2 months. so training amounts to a few good days followed by a few bad days and hoping a race might eventully land on a good day. hasn’t happened yet this year.

in general, i run CTL levels between 115-135 mostly in the mid 120s. this tells you nothing about my training, as with all that has been going on, true planned training has been poor. i am not going to take cipro to get over it bug as it should be about done based on what i have read. there is always next year, well depending on what the two cardio docs think next week that i have follow ups with to assess options. at least the svt is not as bad an issue as it was last year. no caffeine has minimized it and i can easily avert them for the most part.

if i ever get back to true trainng i can let you know then. i consider it more riding right now. very scenic TT course on that end, but wont see it on wed, just the tarmac.

SOP for a few years now
.

i have to add that i have been off and on ST since 2006. different user name/account for some of that. have gotten a lot of good info/ideas here, so why would i quit asking/looking now?

CTL levels between 115 - 135…sigh…i cant even calculate CTL and i know that’s huge (at least for non pros). Was hoping for some nugget that didn’t include hard work and lots of time in the saddle ; ) Best of luck to you at Nationals.

it is how i fair best

unfortuantely, ifeltlike crap today, i suspect there may have been coffee or some other form of caffeine in teh chocolate muffin i had. more than just the chocolate, cuz my hr was and is jacked right now

I would bet break in mileage is a big factor. A new ( stiff) conti probably rolls a little slower than a 50 mile+ tire. I wouldn’t swap at this point unless you ride the wheel a significant distance.

well…what did you choose?

i rode some new tires (vittoria corsa CS IIs), but they tested fast for me when brand new. fun course today. very honest, which is perfect for a TT.
