Rear cassete for austria ironman

Hello
Ironman austria has 1450 metres hill climb in 180km bike leg

I have 50x34 and 12-25 11speed
I like rhis gear ratio beckuse i habe 8gears for 1tooth gradation
I am afraid that this could be to heavy

Should i put rear cassete 11-32
Has anyone completed ironman austria and whic gear ratio you have?
I am good swimmer and runner but not so good on hilly climbs

Any suggestions?

Probably worth telling everyone you cycling ability and rough time you expect to finish in as a 50 x 12 is lacking in top end?

I am aiming to finish in 12.30h to 13h

I finished in 12:00. I run 50x34 and 12-29. I used 34/29 on the climbs to Faaker See and Rupertiberg. In the race I was happy to have the 29, although in training I also did these climbs with 34/25.

As to 50/12: I hardly ever use it, but I am not such a strong biker and like to stop pedalling on downhills. The day before yesterday I was in very good shape and I did the 2nd 90km of the course (as a training) and I used the 50/12 a lot (for the first time in my life). I think that 50/12 is indeed not enough for strong bikers, because there are a lot of smooth descends where you can go really fast.

Has the bike course changed much since 2012? That’s when I raced it, I was on a standard 53/39 chainset with a 12-27 in the back, so a harder climbing gear than your easiest, and I don’t recall any issue getting up the main climb which I think we did twice. I was off an FTP of around 240 and did the bike in maybe 5:40 back then, first 140.6 race. But it could have changed since then, there is fairly hilly terrain surrounding the lake but it was always a fast course.

Cheers, Rich.

Is it posible to make 11speed
12-30
12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,21,23,30?

Somewhere i ve seen a photo of a pro with really small cogs and the last cog was pretty big?

That would be pretty niche. Shimano don’t make (or didn’t when I last checked) a 12-30 in 11 speed, when I wanted one for a hilly race in Norway I bought a Miche Primato Light cassette.

The standard spacing on the Miche for 12-30 was 12,13,14,15,17,19,21,23,25,27,30.

Shimano do a 11-30 in 11 speed, the one I looked at was the CS-R8000 (Shimano 105 I think) and was spaced at 11,12,13,14,15,17,19,21,24,27,30.

I liked the tighter spacing in the climbing gears on the Miche 12-30 personally, but my bike leg had 3000m+ of climbing including a 2 hour 50km initial climb out of T1 with varying gradients. And my chainset was 53/38 for this race.

There was a Miche re-seller in the UK once upon a time who could provide custom gear spacing, but that was a while ago. If you can get the individual sprockets it is trivial to make up and install. But I wouldn’t personally choose such tight spacing lower down and then such a big leap to the 30, the Miche 12-30 is adequate for most purposes without too many wide gaps.

Cheers, Rich.

Also I’m not sure what kind of a gear shift you’d get going up 7 teeth from a 23 to a 30!!

Honestly, if I were you I’d just bang a Shimano 11-28 on there, you’ve got a compact and I’m sure you’d be fine with that. Or make do with what you have and shove the pedals harder!!

53x39 with a 12x25

But I was in good bike shape and rode a 4:50

Didn’t think it was that hilly and would imagine a 34x32 would be overkill.
