why do some college basketball players play for one year, yet others go straight from HS?
if they need to “prove themselves” why not go to Europe and get paid on the up and up?
**1. Hockey is suddenly very popular. Is it because it’s a bunch of white guys? **
Hockey is suddenly popular in the U.S because it is a fast and exciting sport, something we figured out in Canada about 100 years ago. It was only a matter of time until you realized that baseball is like watching paint dry and football has a stop in action every 13 seconds.
Chicks dog hockey. Is it the beards?
I have no idea what dog hockey is but have serious doubts about something when I hear “chicks dig something”. I can guess what the “chicks” are like.
Womens golf is in a bad period.
Yep. They need someone who can speak English to do well, specifically someone not named Kim. Big trouble for them.
Do we Americans act excited at World cup time because we think we should?
The media hypes it so much that people feel guilty, as if they are missing something. Many will watch and for 89 out of 90 minutes, you will realize you were not really missing anything.
I gave up on pro baseball when they made their pants baggy and let them drag in the dirt.
I gave up because teams bought championships instead of developing talent.
**6. I’m gonna miss Ken Griffey Jr. What a ballplayer. **
Could’ve been the best if not for injuries. Best swing I have ever seen.
Is NASCAR fading?
You can only watch cars go in circles for so long, even if you are drinking 12 beers.
4. Do we Americans act excited at World cup time because we think we should?
If you think American’s are acting excited about the World Cup go spend some time in Brazil, France, Spain, etc, during World Cup time. I was in relatively staid Germany during the last one and it was off-the-hook crazy. Entire downtowns turning into huge block parties until daylight. We have a long, long way to go.
I’m gonna miss Ken Griffey Jr. What a ballplayer.
I was never a big admirer. Sweet swing and undeniable talent. But he had a non-chalant, lazy, half-assed quality about him that I found annoying. Maybe he just made it just look that easy, but I still most admire the guys who are obviously putting 100% out all the time, sprinting to first even on easy pop-ups.
UFC/MMA has hit it’s peak. Every jackass under the age of 30 now thinks he is a figther. Sometime in the very near future, someone is going to die (or at least become very, very seriously injured). The sport will be gone when that happens.

So I shouldn’t bother trying to chat up the UFC guys staying in the hotel by my office?
This evening I passed a bunch of guys with shaved heads and in Tapout or UFC gear - kind of stood out in downtown Vancouver. I figured it was an invasion from the 'burbs (yes I’m judgemental) until I realized they were all seriously muscular and not one of them had a straight nose. I’m guessing they’re somehow involved in this weekend’s UFC event.

Gone? MMA is more than just a bunch of under thirties punks wearing Affliction gear. Martial arts has been around for hundreds of years and MMA is just another variation.
Look at NASCAR, or auto racing in general just as an example. They’re inherently dangerous sports which is precisely why people want to watch them.
The Blackhawks made hockey popular again, having an original six team win the cup is huge for the NHL. Shows how much you know hockey and what this means to the league. If I didn’t have kindergarten graduation today I would be at the parade.
Why is it that we care so much about sports that we are willing to pay so much that the players are multi-millionaires and we care so little about things like education, roads, healthcare that we bitch about having to pay 30$ rather than a 20$ co-pay…yet 95% of the country is overweight and hasn’t thrown a ball or run any further than to the fridge for the last 20 years?
Professional sports is yet another scourge on our society. It’s a sport…not a living and if you’re going to try to make a living at it, you shouldn’t be living as well as a teacher or a doctor. Of course most in the country would rather pay 600$ a month car payment than pay the same for health care so the fact that they’d rather pay 2000$ for a playoff ticket than to use that money for things they actually need should come as no surprise.
